A friend of mine wants to re-install his operating system, and we've been digging around for all the necesary drivers. He has an HP Pavilion XL776. Had the thing for a long time, and has long since lost the recover CDs somewhere. So we were going to do a standard windows '98 install. This will work right?

anyway, on the assumption that it would, I went to HP's website and got all the drivers that I could find. Went to AMD's Website and got the chipset drivers too (original Athlon 850 & Irongate chipset). Down to the last two things: drivers for the NIC and modem. Haven't really looked for the NIC drivers yet; this modem is driving me nuts. It's a Lucent WildWire V.90/DSL combo. I did find generic drivers, but the site I got them from said something about HP and others writing specific drivers for their respective companies. This has me a little leery; I don't want to permanently disable the modem if we do the re-format and re-install. Anybody know where I can find HP specific drivers for this thing? HP's own website has nothing.

Are you sure it's not a WildWire card? I was given a Lucent WildWire V.90/DSL combo card. I got it working fine with the generic drivers. Though, I'm not sure what kind of computer it came out of. The generic drivers should work fine. If not call HP (or is it Compaq now?).

Then, yes I think the generic drivers will probably work. The one I had I think was pulled from a Compaq, or an HP.
