HP Laserjet 4L printes pages with just @ or @P

I've had an HP4L for ages and its always done this -- occasionally at the start of job it will print a sheet with just a single commercial-at (@), or very occasionally, for variety I guess, with a P (@P). Always starting at the first character position. And never, as far as I can work out, repeatably, like after a power cycle.

Well, I'm using it a lot more now than I used to and I'm getting a large stack of sheets with just these one or two characters on, and its starting to get irritating

At a guess it looks like it might be PCL running amok, but I've upgarded the drivers without sucess....

Anyone got any thoughts?

Ian
