HP LaserJet 4100N questions

I recently purchased an HP LJ 4100N (600n card) with duplexer from ebay. This is my first attempt at owning and maintaining a laser printer. The printer seems to work fine, but I am having trouble with 2 items

  • When I try duplex printing, the printer usually gives me an error telling me to close the rear paper tray. However, the tray is never open. I did not receive a right-angle cord from the seller, so I bought one at radio shack to see if it worked. I am wondering if I need to find the actual OEM power cord equivalent? The only way I can get the duplexer to work is by manually holding the top of the duplexer cover parallel to the floor. When I release it, it sits at a 45-degree angle (and the tray error appears). Is it possible the duplexer is missing a part or that I do not have it installed correctly? The paper path while holding the duplexer lid seems to work fine.
  • The integrated web server does not seem to work. The printer is visible on the network, but I can't seem to get the web page(s) to display. I generally use IE6, so I was wondering if IE6 was too advanced from the web server to display. I didn't even know this had a web server until I downloaded manuals and drivers.
Thanks for any information.

A common problem with the HP 4xxx series is that people neglect regular maintenance on them. It's likely that the cause of the problem is a worn out feed roller or pad - this is a common cause of many HP feed/jam errors, and it's not uncommon to see people completely replace these printers instead of bringing them in for maintenance. There are kits available for this, but the installation can be a bit complex - I'd suggest having a local laser printer/copy machine shop take a look at it. A good cleaning and complete roller replacement should run you about $50-100, but your printer will be ready for years of trouble-free use afterwards.

Don't worry about the power cable - they're all interchangable.

Regarding the integrated web server: Make sure you've properly configured your printer for your TCP/IP network. It should be given an IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway just like any other computer on your network. After doing this, point your web browser to the IP address you gave the printer (http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx).

I don't recall if the web server has to be "activated" in the printer's menu tree or not. If you don't have a manual available, you can print the menu tree from the front panel, or get a PDF copy from HP's website. Check it for an option to "enable" the web server on your JetDirect card.

Good luck!😀

Much too early for any significant pad/roller wear then. It sounds like a mechanical problem with the printer or duplexer unit. I'd suggest having a tech take a look at it. 🙁
