HP LaserJet 1012 problem

Basically, the printer (USB-connected) worked absolutely perfectly for the first five months and then all of a sudden it has stopped working completely. I haven't made any change in the computer that I know of which could cause something like this to happen. It now gives me an error like "Local DownLevel Document" or "DocumentName failed to print" and doesn't print anything. The printer is shared by two computers on the network (Linksys Router). I have tried everything I could think of:

1) Deleted the printer, installed it again (on both computers)
2) Installed on one, shared on the other and vice versa
3) Checked the USB cable, nothing wrong with it
4) The USB ports on both computers are working fine
5) No spyware/malware/virus on the computers at all
6) Tried the EZInstall utility from the HP website, didn't work

I have run out of options. Anyone care to help?

How about dig out a parallel-port cable and try that, if the 1012 has a parallel-port fitting. We have a couple at work but I honestly don't recall 😕

Unfortunately, the printer only has one port - USB. Also, I don't see why a USB-parallel adapter would work since the USB connection is more direct and still it doesn't work.

BTW I just noticed that the "Terminal Services" service is disabled on the computer which the printer is connected to. I'll go fiddle around with that.

Are any of the LED's Flashing (the 2 small or 1 Large) in a pattern?

Can you print a TEST PAGE (press and hold the GO button for 5 sec, then release)?

No, none of the lights are flashing, just one solid green. And yes, I can print a test page and only a test page!

Did you try removing the DRIVERS completely?
(as in editing out every reference in the REGISTRY)

Also, remove the HP INF file from the hidden Windows\INF directory.
(HP drivers are a pain to get rid of)

Failing that, you may want to remove the USB Hubs and let Windows
re-detect them.

Thanks for your help. Actually it has started to work again. I did absolutely nothing except leaving it unplugged for 2 days. Now it works without a hitch! But, this has happened before too. I leave it unplugged for a couple of days and then hook it up again and then it works for a couple of days and the same error again. So I am pretty sure it will stop working again after a few days....now I just can't figure out why it does this!
