My mom has an HP laptop and it's worked great so far. It seems like a decent deal, but I would check out some other companies just to be sure.

I'm not too big on HP/Compaq notebooks. I was a computer technician, and 7 out of the 11 HP/Compaq notebooks I've tried fixing had hardware failures after the warranty periods. Notebooks and laptops, in general, have very high failure rates after the warranty period. I recently read an article on Digg mentioning that roughly 22% of notebooks have some sort of hardware failure after 1 yr. From my experience, this number is very believable. I think HP/Compaq notebooks are just ok. They are hardly great. If you want a good and reliable notebook, you're better off with a Dell (though its debatable), an Apple, Acer, Asus, Lenovos, or Sony's. I own an HP notebook, but it has some sort of circuitry problem with the battery, and after sending it into HP warranty two times, they were still not able to fix it. By the time I tried sending it in a 3rd time, my warranty expired and I was left with a dud.

I've had 5 laptops since 1995. The first was a Soundbook. Then two WinBooks, and then a Gateway and now a HP. The Gate and the HP have never had a single problem - not even a freeze or a hiccup. I believe any good laptop will serve if it is taken care of. Many users abuse their laptops. Go with whoever gives you what you want for the best price.

A few weeks ago the dv8000t was given an extensive review in depth on this forum - and it was deemed to be an outstanding product.

You seem like you're really not entireley sure on what direction you want to take on a laptop. What are you planning to use it for? Games, office apps or graphics-intensive work?

I really don't think it matters much who you go with. If you get one that doesn't have a defective part in it and you take good care of it, it will last you for a long long time. No matter the brand all of them are gonna put out some laptops that have defective parts in them, that will give the person that is dealt that laptop troubles down the road. Like with LCD's you might get one with pixels issues you might not. Buying PC/Laptop's pretty much are the same way. I would just go with brand that gives you the most for your bucks but I would stick with a known brand at least. Also whoever has best warranty is always a plus.

I can say Dell such and such model is awsome and you could easily buy that model and end up with a dead laptop 6 months from now.
