Hp Laptop

:Q I just bought me a HP zt3380us laptop last one and a few days after the return date I plugged in my phone cord into the modem. Tried to connect to the internet called HP when I couldn't and they had me send the laptop in to have it repaird. A week later they called and said they won't cover it under the warranty because it was caused my the customer. They said I bend a modem pin when I insert the phone line and it cause a poer surge so they have to replace the motherboard and modem for only 600 and some bucks. I don't see how I could of bent anything just hooking up the phone line to the modem
