HP laptop hard drive died, do I need to buy an OS?

Yes, you may say go ask HP but their website isn't answering this clearly and I want to know ASAP!

I have a laptop that only just left its one year warranty and the hard drive died totally, so a new one is on its way. Since these laptops now come with the master OS installed on a recovery partition of the HD (which is dead!), I have no software at all. Typically, whether HP or other laptop manufacturers, would they provide me an OS for cheap/free or should I just hit up amazon for a copy? I do have the windows 7 product key on back of the laptop.

Thanks!

just do a clean install and use the slic2.1 method to activate your copy. easy peasey. check out my digital life. as long as you are installing the same version of the o/s it is 100% legal and you don't get crapware installed.

that's what i do these days.
