I'm trying to recover some data from a friend's HP laptop hard drive. I have a sata/ide to usb converter but this one has just a bunch of pins/prongs instead of the normal sata connection. Anyone else ran into this or have a link for the right adapter?

It isn't a SATA drive. It is IDE. But not the same as desktop IDE. You will need a different adapter.

Really? Dang it.

I googled and found a power adapter but nothing for data. Any hints?

The HP HDD caddy has a 90 degree IDE pin converter. You need to carefully pull that off, then remove the drive from the caddy (4 corner screws.) It can then be read by any 2.5 IDE connection.

You picture shows that has all been done. It looks like a standard 2.5-in IDE drive connector. It provides both power and data.

This picture shows the drive still in the caddy, but with the 90 degree adapter pulled off:

Thanks Corky! I was looking at that and wasn't sure if it was soldered on or not.

I award you two Moddy Snacks.
