Could someone please give me very detailed instructions on how to disassemble my HP N5420l laptop down to the motherboard. The ac power plug-in is somehow bad and needs resodered to the motherboard. I have read some cases where this is a simple task but HP wants $300 for a new board, as they do not repair old ones. Everything works great on my laptop other than it will not take power from the ac power supply. I had this checked out and it works fine. Right now I am charging my battery on a friend's computer but that is getting old.

Thanks

Sorry, no details on the HP specifically, But:

My wife dropped our Dell (on carpet) and broke the AC plug. I removed the little plastic strip right below the keyboard, unscrewed the keyboard, turned the whole thing over, and started to undo all of the chassis screws. If there is an arrow pointing to the screw, it's a chassis screw. Make sure you remove the battery to uncover any hidden screws. The side edges has a couple of screws, too, so check that before prying it open.

Then once inside, I paid careful attention to everything as I pulled it out of the way of the AC plug. I had to JB-Weld it back together with fiberglass strands as reinforcements. It did not have a problem with the solder, but the plug was shattered. It took forever.

If you have a camera, use it to document what you dismantle.

Good luck!
