HP L2335 Question

Hey guys,

This is my first post here in Anandtech's forums. I'm a member over at www.Hardforum.com pages. I'm looking at getting a 23" LCD soon. First I'm wondering what everyone's thoughts on the HP L2335 are? The specs look pretty good IMO. I've been doing a lot of searching through the forums to see what others are saying about this monitor and it's hard to find an un-biased opinion. I've found a couple of reviews that put the HP L2335 right up with the compition but I'm really looking for something that might put this monitor out in front.

For starters it seems like people are saying this monitor uses the same LG screen that Sony, Samsung and Apple are using in their 16ms screens. The brightness seems pretty standard on this screen with a 250 nit rating. The contrast ratio is just about the same as the others with a 500:1 ratio. So I guess I'm wondering why should I choose this monitor over lets say the Samsung or Sony?

I do have to admit this monitor does seem to have a lower price tag. I see that HP has a rebate on their f2304 monitor. Anyone know if there are any rebates on this monitor? I think the lower price at this point is cealing the deal for me. I think if there was a rebate or something out there that might push me over the edge and pull the trigger.

It's the cheapest of the lot. That's a good reason.

Welcome to the AT Forums.

There are not many reviews on the web that I could find which as you said gave an unbiased view of the 23" TFT's out there. There is a thread on this forum that got me interested in a 23" TFT.

The only posts I've seen about the HP L2335 have been very good but as you say perhaps a little bias comes into play here.

I have ordered the Sony SDM-P234/B and I have been told it should be available to look at tomorrow (Monday) which should be interesting. Meanwhile I'll try to find the forum that talked about the L2335 quite a bit. Might even be part of HardForums but I'll post it if I can find it. ;)

[edit]

It was HardForums so you have probably seen the thread. :)

Shagga,

Hey thanks for looking for me. The Sony SDM-P234/B is actually another monitor I'm looking at as well! From what I can tell the Sony 234/B and the L2335 pretty much have the same specs from what I have seen at least. Can I ask you what made you order the Sony over the HP? I see newegg has the Sony for just over $1,800.00; but it's not in stock. Can I ask where you ordered yours from?

Thanks again for the response.:D

Well, it was as simple as this. Out of the HP, Sony, BenQ and the Apple I went through the process of trying to see as many of the monitors as I could. In fact no-one seemed to have these in stock so seeing them was particularly difficult.

Out of all the reviews and threads read all over the place it was between the HP and Sony more or less right from the start. What clinched it for me was that a lot of people were reporting that the Sony panels were arriving with zero pixel defects which is particularly important to me as I am a bit of a perfectionist. However, a lot of threads and reviews on the HP mentioned that a number of dead pixels were apparent on delivery.

Okay, so I spoke to Sony and although they can be militant as we all know they convinced me that their attention to detail and quality assurance is far more intense than many other companies even though it's the same panel. Perhaps it's their buying power, I don't really know but they intimated that LG or who ever would not send sub-standard panels to Sony in the first place! This could be a crock of rubbish but it kind of made sense I suppose. Whether LG for example value Sony as a customer more than others sounds ludicrous but who knows.

Anyway, to answer your question the retail shop that I ordered my Sony from said they would pixel check it for me and I could see it up and running in the shop before taking it home. SOLD!

I ordered it from the "Sony Centre" which are independent retailers in the UK. Sorry! but you have loads of places online to buy the darn thing in the states. The UK seems not to have this product at all...

Good luck in your decision. Oh, by the way, IMO the Sony looks like £1,600 worth on monitor, the HP looks mightly fine but reports say it looks a bit cheap and plasticy! ;)

Well I just pulled the trigger on the L2335. LOL.... After I ordered it I saw that HP had dropped it price by almost $200.00 cheaper then what I bought it for from compusa. I wonder if CompUSA matches pricing? Oh well only one way to find out! LOL.. Calling Comp as we speak. I hope they are open!

I ordered it with 2nd day shipping. They say they ship within 24 - 48 hours so I figure I'll prolly have it around Wednesday or Thursday; I have all day Friday off from work so I should be able to tinker with this bad boy!

I'll report my findings once I get them! When you get your monitor let us all know how it looks and feels playing on it! :) I love new stuff....

I rang the Sony Centre just this minute and the TFT had just arrived. They're pixel checking it now and have said no dead/stuck pixels have been found. That's good news. So, I'm off to go and have a look at it and hopefully be back in a couple of hours or so.

Should I indeed buy the monitor I'll throw some pics up in good forum fashion so I can gloat. ;)

Right, just got home unpacked it and set it up. I have not done any tweaking yet just impatiently fired it up.

This monitor is "absolutely stunning". No dead or Stuck pixels as promised by the retailer and they were correct. Anyway, enough about that, I've taken some pics and I'm just going to make them internet friendly and will post links to them shortly.

One happy chappy one could say. :D

My system specs are in my Sig. However, briefly they are an ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe, P4 3.4GHz, with 2GB of PC3200 DDR, Gainward GeForce 6800GT Golden Sample, TBSC and a pair of Creative Stereo Speakers. (Had to lose the 5.1 as the litlun kept pinching the rear satelites :))

Pics to follow, just charging the battery. I can tell you that Far Cry plays very smoothly at 1920 x 1200 and Lock On also looks and plays awesome. Your gunna love gaming all over again. The monitor scales very well also even at 1024 x 768 (better to run FSAA at this res though) :)

Gimme 10 mins. :)

[edit]

These images are not very good. The flourescent lighting is playing havoc with my camera. Appologies. :frown:

Lock On Cockpit
Lock On External View
Far Cry

Far Cry Screen Shot 1 1920 x 1200
Far Cry Screen Shot 2 1920 x 1200
Far Cry Screen Shot 3 1920 x 1200

Those screen shots and pictures just look awesome! I found out my monitor was shipped today so I should either have it Wednesday or Thursday. I can't wait! I take some pictures and screen shots of everything. Did you have AA or AF turned on for any of those shots? Also what FPS were you running in FarCry at 1920 X 1200? Just curious. I think we have simular systems so I'm just wondering what to expect. You said scaling is pretty good on this monitor? How does 1600 X 1200 look on her?
