STORY

Now that HP and Compaq have offically merged, the unified company is already making plans on killing it's redundant product lines. As expected, Compaq's printing division is going to be axed, and HP's handheld line is going to be killed in favor of Compaq's iPAQ line.

I don't think that any one is really going to miss Compaq's printers, but the HP Jordana had a small but loyal fan base.

In the future, it looks like HP's Laptop line (they had one?) is going away, and the combined company is getting completely out of the RISC server business.

What do you guys think of this plan? Makes sense, I guess, but a lot of decent products going to disappear because of it.

wow..that really sucks, i guess. *shrugs*

Have the two companies merged or did one buy out the other? Is there a new merged name? I hope this isn't another NEC-Packard Bell deal. That was a mistake..er...both companies were going in the tubes anyways.

BTW, except for the dust problem, I find the Jornada to be the best design out there. The backup battery and hotswappable main battery are essential.

Didn't the iPAQs also have the same dust problem? Did they fix that in the newer models?

Yes the Ipaq had the problem and yes they fixed it.

What's unsettling about this announcement is that I was just reading up on the specs of the new Jornada a few days ago. If they are at all smart, they'll combine features of the two.

its not really a merger, i think HP bought out compaq in stock basically.

the HP omnibook line is nicer than some of the compaq armadas, but in general compaq makes much better laptops for business. the compaq presario line is better too for laptops, they have a radeon 7500 notebook for p4, the HP one has a savage4 based integrated video one for the same price. yay for the consumer.

my dad is pretty happy about all this, he works for an OEM that does a lot of business with hp, so i guess they are getting some compaq business in the future too, so he might actuallyhave job security for a while . also the ipaq is for the most part better than the jornada. it makes sense that they are killing the jornada

From the press release:

<< The Compaq iPAQ? Pocket PC, re-named the HP iPAQ Pocket PC, will be our smart handheld platform. The best of the current HP Jornada technology will be engineered into the platform. Jornada products will be phased out of the market in 2002. HP will continue to innovate in wireless, mobility and voice technology. HP also will offer the iPAQ Blackberry device for end-to-end wireless e-mail solutions, under the HP brand. >>
