HP hard-drive problems (contd)

I posted about this a few weeks ago, but I've had a few projects that are keeping me entirely too busy to have done much...so here it goes:

I've got an HP 8662C that I've tried to use the System Recovery disk on to format the hard-drive and restore the OS to factory settings, blah blah, etc.

The first time I did this, I got an invalid system disk message. Sucked. So, I tried with a windows 2000 cd. then got NTDLR file missing error.

Right now I've got it formatting and recovering from the recovery cd again, and I'm pretty sure that's not going to work....

so anyone else got some ideas? I know HP's suck, and I know I *should* just get a new one, but this is a friend's machine, and he can't really afford a new one. think maybe just a new hard-drive would do it? thanks...
