I just purchased HP G7-1310US and tried to install Natty but ran into two problems.

1) I boot from liveCD and Ubuntu runs fine no video problem what so ever ( I had to close the lid and open and then disply would show up). After that I used install option and then screen becomes blank after a while. I read the other thread,( http://askubuntu.com/questions/1056...11-10-oneiric-ocelot-on-an-hp-pavilion-g7-not )setting nomodeset kernel option but it did not help to resolve black screen. I also tried wubi installation method but the same result with the same problem. I tried installing 12.04 from LiveCD as well as wubi but no go.

2) I tried to install from liveCD (non-wubi method) but I can not create extended partition as HD already has 4 primaray partitions: came with preinstalled Win7, HPRecovery, HP Tools and the other primary partiton. How can I install using this pre-existing 4 primary partition? Any suggestion.

That laptop should work out of the box. Ubuntu 11.10 is running on kernel 3.0 which supports the latest sandy bridge technology. My laptop has a i5-2520m with HD3000 graphics and it works fine.

That's strange that it's not working for you.

You could try another Ubuntu distro - Linux mint has had a good success rate on laptops where Ubuntu hasn't worked at all (even though mint is based on Ubuntu...//shrugs)

Thanks for the reply. I will try to download LinuxMint but meanwhile do you know the answer for the problem #2.

I tried to run Ubuntu 12.04 from live CD without installation with nomodeset and it display the Unity interface but then after things become choppy.

You may need to delete a partition. On my brother's HP laptop we deleted the 'HP Tools' partition.

As for booting with the 'nomodeset' option, this should not be done. Intel's graphics drivers require KMS to perform properly.
