One from Amazon: HP 4x4x6 $113 after rebates.

Staples : Iomega 4x4x6 Apprx. $130 after rebates.

I'm torn between the two (& Dont want internal drive).

Which is the better piece?

Appreciate any info ...

HP drives are better, but the Iomega might be a remarked drive (made by another company...). Since it's less expensive, get the HP.

Get the HP.

Just a word of warning...USB CDRWs are not very reliable....those numbers look like USB to me...maybe I'm wrong...but USB CDRWs make my old 2x mitsumi (with a 512k buffer that burnt more coasters than most coaster making factories can produce) look like it has BURNproof... move your mouse and you'll probably get a buffer under run...

Edit: you might want to try firewire or SCSI if you have a SCSI card...I don't think firewire cards are all that pricey...but 1394 is ALOT more reliable than USB.

(IEEE1394 = firewire = i.Link)

Yes, they are both USB's.

I'm not an install type of guy and want a dependable External drive (as dependable as they may be).

Thanks for all the advice.

More comments are welcome.

I thought they are both bought the technology from Sony.

> USB CDRWs are not very reliable

I have a USB writer (the HP 8200e) that I use on a K6-2-500 and a Duron-800. With all my programs open, the K6-2-500 doesn't have any problems burning. When, though, I'm running the TV tuner program for my G200 (which is a problematic beta program on win2k), the buffer drops around a percent or two every second. I'd think that's understandable on a slow machine.

On the Duron, just about the only time I lost a CDR was when I accidentally hit my desk and the disc skipped.

I need to be able to port my writer from PC to PC frequently. IDE or SCSI burners are bad for this. USB CD-Writers are awesome. Except for the transfer rate limit.
