Morning All,
I just got a new lease roll laptop and it is an HP Envy G6 15u with an i7-8665u, which features the Intel® UHD Graphics 620 as the IGP. When my employer ordered this new laptop, they also included the option of a discrete video in the form of an AMD WX3200. I got this new laptop about six weeks ago and then on Friday in the last 30-minutes of my work day the video on the screen of a Samsung UN43MU6290 would go black, return, and repeat. The rate of this going to black would speed up until the screen stayed black and then the Samsung would display No Signal. Mind you I connect the Samsung to the laptop via HP USB Dock G5 breakout box. So, the path is laptop->-breakout box-->Samsung, and I am using the HDMI port on the breakout box to feed the Sammy.
NOTE: While this Samsung TV is more than capable of handling 3840x2160p60, due to age of my eyes I work in a regular 1920x1080 desktop resolution. And during my initial investigation I discovered some rather strange things. First, in Windows 10 Advance Display Settings the report says Desktop Resolution is 1920x1080 (which is what I want), but the Active Signal is 3840x2160p30 (which isn't what I want). On page 107 is the Samsung manual it says HDMI 2.0 is required:

I understand the need to use HDMI 2.0 (or DP) for using 3840x2160p30or60 but why would the operating and or laptop output 1080P inside a 2160P signal, and thus forcing you to use HDMI2.0? Worse yet is I discovered the IGP can only do HDMI1.4, which cannot do above 24Hz at 4K video and requires DP (DisplayPort**). And why do I care about the IGP in the first place? I don't but I discovered that the IGP, and not the discrete video is being used! So how do I force the discrete video and not the IGP even though both have drivers installed?
This is where it gets hairy. On HP Envy, in the BIOS you can select UMA-mode (IGP only) or Hybrid-mode (both IGP+Discrete), but no means to use the discrete only. ** There is no DP port on the physical laptop and is only available on the breakout box.
OK, so the big question is this? Right now, at this very moment, I have it stable using the HDMI cable coming off the breakout box and feeding into the HDMO2.0 input on the Samsung. All three ports were supposed to be 2.0 but now I doubt it. But I am still at a loss for why Windows 10 reports a 3840x2160 signal when my desktop rez is only 1920x1080, and the 3840x2160 is confirmed on the Sammy.
