Give it a few years, I predict Acer and Lenovo to be the top makers with HP/Dell buying OEM systems from them and branding them like they do notebook computers now from the Taiwanese OEMS.

HP is the better of the big 3. Not saying its good or anything, but they are the least suckiest. :)

This is why Dell went with AMD and introduced such products as the E521.

In fact, I have been thinking strongly that AMD went AM2/DDR2 memory just to get the Dell contract. It's all about logistics. Dell was using DDR2 memory in all of it's desktops and laptops. Now with AMD using DDR2, the only difference between systems like the E520 and E521 is the cpu type and motherboard, two items instead of three. Everything else is exactly the same, the case, the power supply, etc. From a logistics standpoint, that's a big difference. And we all know there was no performance increase between 939 and AM2.

Dell was too little too late. By the time they realized AMD had a great CPU, Conroe came out. Now they're saying, "hey, we have this cool new processor!" And everyone is now saying, "who cares." If they would have switched as soon as AMD came out with their Athlon 64 processors, it would have been MUCH better timing. HP did the same thing. Again, too little, too late.

That aside, I prefer HP waaaay over Dell.

Read my edit.

You bring up a great point, but Dell is still offering everything they used to, just added a new line of systems. You can get an E520 with an Intel C2D, or an E521 with an AMD.

And the price difference is staggering. Dell is not paying much for those AMD cpu's, that's for sure.

It took Dell HOW many years to realize AMD had a great CPU?

They knew AMD had a great CPU all along. I doubt they would've switched to AMD had Intel given Dell priority with the Core 2 chips over Apple. Dell took a lot of hits sticking with Intel, and when Intel gave them the shaft, Dell retaliated by taking in AMD.

Last spring/summer, Dell was involved in the bad battery fiasco. HP did not get mixed up in that, so they probably gained a lot during that recall period. I have an HP laptop, and gave one to my daughter-in-law as well - never had a problem of a hiccup with it. I have no problem with Dell, except too much hype. :)

Lenovo/IBM are still up on my druthers list.

Neither one of those companies has bad computers. Building your own is always the best option for some people, but I've owned many dells in the past and they've all been really reliable.
