Before you buy this drive, READ THIS ARTICLE!!!

There are a number of unhappy customers who bought this drive after being told it would be firmware upgradeable to DVD+R. Sounds like you will need to get a 200i for full compatibility.

Yes, you want the RW format, but you would also like to have the DVD-R capability that this drive does not support. I'd stay away from this drive.

Yeah... I thought the DVD-R/RW format was the best... Maximum PC/Computer shopper said that HP promised the world with the HP DVD+RW drive but did not deliver. The +RW format is not compatible with as many set top DVD players as the -R.

I -really- want to get the Pioneer DVD-R/RW burner... and leads to a retail box (I need the software) in the $300-350 range?!?

DONT DO IT MAN! :Q

hehe - all drama aside - the bottom line is this drive can't write + or - R media - the write once media that costs under $5. The RW media is nice (this one will write +RW ONLY) - but unless you're just getting the drive to do backups onto RW media (which will get expensive), it's a waste.

The Pioneer DVR-A04 just came out with a shelf price of under $500 - it's a third gen DVD writer. That's what's causing the prices on these drives to plummet. If you are interested in this drive - just hold off a month (or buy it with Blue) - I'm sure it'll be under $200 by then (or 6 weeks from now, at most).

FROM ANOTHER FORUM::

Stay away from this drive (I have one)

HP lied about a firmware update to support the more compatible DVD+R.
This drive supports only CDRW/CD-R and DVD+RW (note the '+' symbol). You cannot write to DVD-R (note the minus symbol) or DVD-RW as used in Apple super drives, pioneer AO series and Panasonics.

Currently DVD+RW blanks are abou $10.00 each. I repeat you cannot WRITE to the cheaper DVD-R or DVD-RW with this drive and HP WILL NOT have a firmware update for this unit. My advice? Stay away! (a little advise from your unlce ghoul)

No.. the second generation DVD+R/+RW drives are making the prices on these plummet. HP's dvd200i is only a few weeks away and supports both DVD+R and DVD+RW.

It's still up in the air whether DVD+R is as compatible as DVD-R.

Pioneer DVR-A04 just came out with a shelf price of under $500 - it's a third gen DVD writer.

I don't see much difference in the specs from the A03 and the A04, so you may look for a good deal on a A03. If you want a A04, also search for the 104 which is the identical A04 but OEM.

DVD+R is not compatible with DVD-R, but should be compatible with new set-top video players. Here's the low-down:

MANY DVD Standards:

DVD-RAM <--- This is the cartridge version... useful only for archiving (does random writes easily)
DVD-R <--- Most compatible to DVD drives and players, similar to CD-R
DVD-RW <--- Also mostly compatible, similar to CD-RW (Does not write randomly, which means you must burn like CD-RW)
DVD+RW <--- Not as compatible, see HP's web site for info... Does allow for random writes, which makes it more like a data disc than a CD burn
DVD+R <--- I don't know the specs for this yet, but related to DVD+RW

Hope this helps y'all. I've been using the Pioneer A03, and though its a 1 hour burn with normal DVD-R's, they play in my players fine (PS2 and Pioneer A-343).

I already have this drive and you know, it's freaking great! DVD+R, who cares!?!? I want to be able to rewrite the thing if it craps out on me. I spoke to HP and they said that they WILL have a +R firmware update available, but aren't sure when. The new drive is EXTERNAL - who wants that? Not me!

After I got this drive, I did a little research online and saw all the people bitching and whining - then 20 minutes later I copied a DVD, plopped it into my APEX - no problem. Plopped it into my Samsung - no problem! Plopped it into my Jaton - NO PROBLEM! Plopped it into a Sony Drive - NO PROBLEM.

According to some recent online reports, the +R/+RW formats have won the "standards" battle. Hey - who likes to fight with Sony, HP, Dell and the rest? Plus, everyone is making their drives compatible with this (Check out TechTV.com's news stories). Yeah, HP thought they'd have the +R update sooner than later, but it was in a state of flux - I cannot blame them for waiting until it is a final thing.

"Copy a DVD you ask?" - Well, of course it took an extra 15 minutes to get it ready to copy to DVD from the original through a couple of steps (2), but it was well worth it and the whole 2 hour movie only took 29 minutes to burn. And guess what - NO MORE COASTERS! If it's messed up - reformat it or just burn again!

Listen - for $299 AND MEDIA FOR $6.99 - It's a hell of a deal. I ordered 25 new discs from TigerDirect.com today - their price KICKS BUTT. I checked Pricewatch, PriceGrabber and Dealtime - and only eCost has it for less, but by $2 - it's an AUCTION, plus they only have 30 pieces. I've had 10 friends (at least) order it today. Hope they have a lot!

Why must everyone whine and cry? Just do it! ;)
