HP dv9700 w/ Geforce 8600M gaming issues

I have the above laptop connected to a Dell monitor. I downloaded far cry's demo. When I go to play it, the texture is like a grayish blue that makes up almost all the shapes in the game.

I had an old game lying around, Serious Sam 2, and the textures in that are all checkered and boxy. Anyone know what is wrong here and how I can fix it?

Did you update the drivers? Are you in Vista? If not, updated DirectX? (Stupid question, I know.)

I'm not sure what to advise aside from the standards. Updates, etc. I have the exact same card and have not had a single issue with it thus far.

I just got the laptop. It's brand new. I checked Nvidia's website and it looks like the drivers are the latest. I am in Vista64 Ultimate.

You might want to try running in administrator mode then since both those games are kinda old ...

Both games installed perfectly. Isn't that, in effect, running in administrator mode? What other demo game would you recommend that I download and install?
