Hp DV6000t VS. Dell E1505

I'm looking to purchase a new laptop after Christmas for less then $1200.

I need it to have DVDRW, Glossy Screen, Dedicated GPU. Suggestions are welcome.

Where do you stand on the 6000t vs. e1505.
 
I'm biased because I've only used HP/Compaq laptops but my friends all use Dell. If customer support isn't a concern to you then either is a good choice, HP gives you more bang for your buck and has more options, but Dell's laptops are pretty solid for the most part (more so than their PCs). Just hope you don't ever need to use their customer support, from what I've witnessed you'd have an easier time nailing Jell-o to a tree.
 
i personally would go with the dv6000t. inspirons are ugly as hell, imo, and the support isn't there. choose ur specs, see how the prices come out, and if the dell is like $200 cheaper, i might go for it. but that's how i am. first see how the pricing is on each laptop.

so the HP comes out to over $100 cheaper, with a "better" operating system, 12-cell battery vs. the 9-cell for the dell, and looks a whole lot better. Imprint Finish (on the HP) does add a few fingerprints but it's also more durable.

if you feel like having more hard drive space, a faster CPU, etc., you have that freedom with the HP. i wouldn't purchase it just yet, though. when i bought by DV2000t, there was a free 1gb ram upgrade and 80gb hard drive upgrade...it'll save you like $75.
 
If I had to choose between the two, the HP. It's better-designed and, as alimoalem pointed out, you get more for the money.

If you're not attached to Windows for what you're doing, investigate a MacBook. Normal retail is just out of your range for what you want ($1299), but if you're a college/university student you can get that new system for $1199. Refurbs with DVD burners are $1049 or less. Should you decide on one, though, wait until mid-day January 9th or later: that's when the MacWorld keynote speech finishes, and when you'll likely qualify for a free upgrade to iLife 07 instead of having to use iLife 06.
 
Also don't forget that theres a 20% off coupon at Dell for Laptops $999 and up. That would bring down the cost of the Dell to about $966 before taxes.
 
Just got a HP 6000t for my mom and dad for xmas... It was just over $1000 with the HP TV tuner. Didn't go for the core 2, just the core duo 1.6. XP MCE, 80gb HD, 1gb ram, 256mb graphics. Don't waste your money on the 20$ recovery CDs, they just reinstall to "new" state. HP's quick play setup is cool, get the 15$ remote, it stores in the PC Card slot... Main thing I don't like is they put the PCcard slot right where you would use a mouse...right front side. Also, they partition the 80GB drive into 64GB Main drive/12GBrecovery. So when shipped you have about 40GB left.

I spent some time uninstalling a bunch of crap and played with it for about a week. Made me want to buy one for me...

Things I would do if I bought one for myself is, entry level Core 2 duo, Same graphics, smallest HD unless the upgrade is free. Buy a 7200 100GB drive for 105 bucks and drop it in.
Screw the 12 cell, it sticks out an inch from the bottom and looks gay. Just get a second 6 cell, it lasts long enough.

that is an AMAZING deal...i might get that in a month or two...very nice deal, 14" is perfect (imo), solid brand, good retailer, good parts...

about the dell 20% off coupon, anyway, it's not 20% off what i configured. dell has it's own daily deals and those are not included if a coupon is used. in short, you get 20% off ~$1450, coming to under $1200

again, good choice on the Asus

I spent the $19 on the recovery CDs and the first thing I did was format the recovery partition since the recovery CDs rebuild it anyways if I ever need it. I prefer the 12 cell compared to the 6 cell because the way it makes the laptop sit allows for much better cooling, sure it would look better with the 6 cell but then I'd be lugging around a cooling pad, no need for one anymore with the 12 cell. I'm wishing I opted for more RAM now since it would have been cheaper than to buy my own, but oh well, live and learn I guess.

Oh yeah, I have the dv2000z (AMD X2 TL-50 and 14.1" LCD), not the dv6000.
 
6000t comes with single screen resolution: 1280x800 (which is suxors unless all you want is to browse internet); while E1505 has three options, 1280x800, 1440x900, 1680x1050.

I agree it probably has better cooling with the 12 cell, but it sucks they cant come up with a better design for a 12 cell without making the laptop an inch thicker. I am sure there is some argument also that the keyboard is in a better typing position with the 12 cell...

I have a 2 year old compaq x1000 series. it has the battery in the front. Much better design since there is more weight on the front of the laptop. The HP6000 feels like it wants to tip over backwards, it doesn't, but it just isn't balanced.

I reformatted the partition and moved the swap space to it, fixed size of 2GB. allso moved the IE temp files folder there.

That Norton Internet Security BS annoys the crap out of me. It is gone...They want 60 bucks a year to use it anyway...ripoff...Any norton utility to me is more a virus than a program. It took 10 minutes to uninstall it, that is how infested it gets into the system...

Also removed the Office trial and installed open office. Pretty much it for the config. Probably uninstalled several other things but cant remember...
 
I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 (Canadian equiv. of the E1505)... and I love it so far. 1gb RAM, T7200, 120gb HDD, X1400. My only gripes are the plastic LCD lid and the loud dvd drive. If you get the Intel Proset wireless card, make sure to remove their software but keep the drivers as the intel software uses 8 processes and a chunk of ram.

cant believe you said that. compaq products are the worst, unless it was an insanely great deal i would never buy a compaq again.

i just bought an inspiron 1501 and im pretty happy with it, the only thing i dont like is that its a little heavy but at 499 i think it was a great deal
