i have a hp dv6000, it comes with the following:

vista premium
1gb ddr2 ram...don't know what speeds though
amd athlon x2 tk-55
160gb sata dr...i'm assuming that this is the 3.0gb/s
and etc..

the things i want to upgrade is the ram and processor maybe a hd change later on.

i know that the processor is the one with the 512kb cache instead of the 1mb. I just don't know what options are out there. i have been out of the computing world for a while now, i don't know if there are socket difference between the laptop and desktop anymore. I was browsing on new egg and i would like to upgrade to at least 2.0 x2.

as for the ram, i know i want at least 2gb to be able to run vista since 1gb is taxing and cutting into the paging file. Just don't know which speeds. I assume since the bus is 1600, that would mean the fsb is actually 800 and so to get best performance and run at a 1 to 1 ratio i should be looking at the pc 6400 speeds? is that correct?

as for the harddrive i really want to step it up to the 7200rpm models since this one is 4200...and the performance increase would jsutify the price...but that's for later one

So basically i just want to know what ram chips and speed should i look for and what processor should i get?

I looked into upgrading my old Compaq laptop with a Sempron processor to a Turion. There is a socket different I think.
HP used to put maintenance manuals on the web so google to find them. Processors are upgradable but it's quite a job. Make sure you read and go through the manual carefully.

I'm guessing memory is going to be DDR2 PC5300 (667MHz). You might be able to go up to 4GB (2x2GB).

Looks like your PC2-5300 RAM is upgradeable to 2GB.

All the specs I've viewed, referred to the HDD as a SATA 5400 rpm unit. A 7200 rpm upgrade will still be an improvement.

You're on your own with a processor swap. I don't consider those an easy novice upgrade.

Good Luck!

Concur with Old Hippie. The move to 2 GB of RAM is easy - and also the jump to a 7200 RPM 200 GB SATA drive is easy. Those will provide a noticeable performance increase in your apps.

The CPU change is not a "user upgrade" - and would entail more risk. I wown't go there. :)

if there's a significant price difference between the 5400rpm and 7200rpm drive, go with the 5400rpm drive. 5400 is a lot faster than 4200. newegg has a 250gb 5400rpm drive for $115. i think thats ur best bang for buck

yeah i know the ram is a piece of cake, and that can be done blind...just was wondering on the speed of the ram...so from what you guys have said pc 5300 is what i should be looking for...great save me some money from having to go to pc6400

hd i can do also blind.

as for the proc, i can do that because i have done proc change on laptops before...just the obstacle of taking things apart on this laptop that might pose a problem but i am sure i can find directions on how to take it apart online...I just want to know what options should i be looking for to upgrade to. I found out that it is a S1 socket so i should be looking for that correct/

The HP CPU is under the keyboard. Somewhere I have a disassembly breakout for the dv1000. It can't be too different. I'll see if I can find it.

OK - here you go. The complete Service Manual for the dv6000 in PDF format. It has details on changing the CPU and everything else.

Just paste this into Google and it will download you the PDF file - then do a SAVE AS and you have it.
