I can get into the System Recovery window. But, it sees no Windows Installation.

When choosing the Command Prompt it starts at X:\windows\system32

If I go to startup Repair, it will ask if I want to load drivers. I can see "Drive D and Drive E." But, when I double click them, it says I have to format them.

Also, in command prompt, if I try to go to D: or E: it says "Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)

This is a HP dv2-1110us with Vista Home Premium 64-Bit

First guess would be failing hard drive. You can either download the diags for the particular brand hard drive or use Hitachi DFT (Device Fitness Test) to check the health of the HD.

You can also try running the Vista repair option multiple times even if it does not see the OS the first time. This has worked sometimes for me. Took me three or four repairs recently but it finally started up normally.

The more I work on Vista systems the more I hate it. I recently worked on a Dell XPS 410 with Vista HP. The symptoms indicated a bad hard drive but nothing I did worked. Multiple diags ran clean. Even restoring using the restore partition would not bring it back to normal. I finally had to wipe the Vista partition and clean load Windows 7 to get it working. Vista sucks.

Yeah. I'm tired of vista. I always recommend going to 7. Funny thing is, this guy said he got this thing 6 months ago. They are still selling new computers with Vista on them? Retarded.

Ran DFT and it came up with

"Problem Detected on Non-Hitachi disk drive, please contact your HDD supplier for additional support.

Disposition code = 0x70

So it looks like the hard drive is failing. Hopefully it's still under warranty and HP will replace it. If you need recovery discs you can normally order from HP for about $15. If you go to HP's support website and pull up the driver list for that model it will tell you if recovery media is available and allow you to order it. I had to do this with a DV7 laptop a couple of months ago for a HD failure.

I know Dell outlet still sells Vista systems. Not sure about HP.

Yeah, I just did this with another HP/Compaq machine last week. $22.50 shipped for the disks.

New drive, maybe even bigger.

Thanks for the help.
