HP Dv1540US laptop cpu temps

I have a hp laptop dv1540us and i've been noticing that the bottom of the notebook has been getting really hot lately. So i downloaded a few programs to try to read the cpu temperature and the range of temps i've been getting is crazy. When i first boot up, it would be around 40-45C. Then when i start doing some more cpu intensive tasks, it would jump all the way up to 75 C. Is 75C way too hot for a laptop cpu to be running? Could the cpu fan on the bottom be defective?
