HP Deskjet software problem

I am using HP's deskjet software that came with a 3650 deskjet.

I only install the black and white cartridge for use with printing text. However, each time I print it says that I do not have a Color catridge installed (well, DUH). I checked all of my printer settings and its set at grayscale, etc... nothing that indicates I want to print in color.

Is there a workaround for this? Or do I install the color cartridge?
 
you need to install a color cartridge because to run, the firmware in the printer looks to see if theres a color as well as a Black.
