hp deskjet 640c problems

theres a problem with a friend's printer, its a hp deskjet 640c printer, which was bought about a week ago.

its been installed and everything but now when you try to print a test page or anything at all from the computer, then it spits out the paper without printing and says theres an error. i've tried many things but can't figure out the problem. its not the tape still on the catridges because i've already removed the tape from both.

can anyone please help?

Reinstall the drivers, make sure it's set as default in control panel.
Click on properties of ypur printer and make sure the connection is working properly.
Then proceed to test it with the HP utilities.
