HP DeskJet 560 problems

Since I recently upgraded to an MSI6309 motherboard I have been having trouble with my printer, HP DeskJet 560.It prints test pages fine, it prints the self test fine. The problem is when I try to print something (usually from a website) it starts printing okay but a little ways through I get garbage characters, smiley faces, whatever. Then it ejects the sheet, prints okay for a bit and then more garbage. Possible bad cable?

System specs:

PIII700@933
Windows ME
MSI 6309, rev. 1, bios 1.6, VIA 4in1 4.25a drivers
No device conflicts

Thanks.

how about regular bidirectional parallel port?

the printer is old, it does not support ECP.

also, make sure the cabling is right. for ECP compatible printers, you need an ieee 1284 cable.

Thanks for the replies. I took Mday's suggestion and set the port to bi-directional in the bios. Seems okay now.
