HP computer won't power on

  1. Overview of the problem
    My friend's HP desktop is not turning on, I need help fixing it please. My friend is not much of a computer expert so he asked me to try to fix it.
  2. Full description of the problem and symptoms
    He has an HP Pavilion a747c desktop. The problem is that my his computer just won't power on at all. There is a green light that flashes on the back of the desktop where the PSU is located. It is not supposed to flash.
  3. Is the problem consistent and repeatable, or entirely random, or semi-random?
    Has been happening for at least a week
  4. I already tried these steps:

  5. My hardware

    • Hp Pavilion a747c

      HP Pavilion a747c
      Intel P4 2.8 ghz
      ASUS PTGD1-LA mobo
      512mb ram
      160gb harddrive
      onboard video and audio
      9-in-1 card reader
      300 watt psu (not sure what other specifics)

sorry, the flashing light it located on the back of the PSU, which is on the backside of the desktop tower.

1. Indicator light should be solid and not flashing.
2. If the HP power supply is flashing, disconnect everything inside. If the LED is still flashing, the power supply is probably bad.
3. If the LED is completely off, then the power supply is probably bad.

the indicator light is solid when I disconnect the motherboard...

Does that mean the mobo is the problem?

I just tried using a coolmax PS-124 psu tester and when I plugged in the motherboard connector it flashes a light on the +5VBS icon. There is no solid light, just a flashing light and it coincides with the flashing light of the PSU. Does this mean the PSU is not working?

UPDATE: I got the problem fixed by buying a new Antec Basiq 350W psu and it works fine for the time being.
