HP/Compaq NC8000 drive question

I've been looking to replace the fixed optical drive with a DVD-burner but need to know how the primary IDE channel is set up. Hard drive is master and the current optical drive (CDRW) is slave, but are they set up that way specifically, or does this notebook use cable select for the IDE channel(s)?
