So I'm looking at the HP Color Laserjet 1600 and 2600n printers at Staples, $300 and $400 respectively. I currently have an Epson Stylus Photo printer, and I'm wondering if the color laserjet is worth the money. The 2600n I can connect directly to my wireless router, whereas the 1600 I will have to network off one of my computers.

As far as making pictures, the Staples employee said the pictures on the laserjet are much more permanent and will outlast the paper it's printed on.

I have a 2600n and the print quality is very good. Much better than the older 2500 series. The machine is very fast as well since each toner cartridge is an all-in-one unit and doesn't use a separate drum assembly. I also am using the network interface which works as it should.

The cost of consumable may be a higher cost though than your epson printer.

MSRP of 2600 toner at local office supply is approx:

$75 for black (2.5K yield) / $83 for color (2K yield)

Aftermarket consumables will of course be less expensive. There is good aftermarket toner and components available in the industry at this moment. You would just need to find a remanufacturer that does it right. The right tools and equipment are needed. To replace the opc drum it has to be cut in half. I actually have the tooling to do this. I wouldn't expect all remanufacturers to replace the drum especially the drill and fill guys. Don't buy super cheap compatibles. You will get what you pay for. Expect to pay $50 to $60 per toner cartridge for good product.

Prints on the laserjet will be more permanent. Depending on quality of ink in the epson there are things that can degrade prints such as light can cause prints to fade.

@wseyller

I looked at the link to Superior Imaging Products and I couldn't find any toner for the HP Colorjet 2600N.

I am looking for replacement toner for my 2600N.

You are correct that it wasn't listed. It wasn't yet added to the database but now it is.

Search this keyword in search bar: Q600

will list all 4 cartridges

The Staples guy said more like 3k or 4k yield on the color. I'm assuming his quote is for economy mode printing. If I'm going to print pictures, I will most likely want to use the best picture quality I can.

Even at the prices for the toners, I believe it is still more economical than buying inkjet cartridges for my current printer. I might get 30 high quality prints out of a $30 dollar cartridge, maybe a little more. To get even 2k prints out of a $83 (x3) toner cartridge is much better. And, with the inkjet, when I print color, it's also using black ink which makes it even more costly.

I went back and forth from HP, and ended up with only HP. I have a multifunction 2840, and it works great. I buy supplies from Sams club. <fwiw>

just fyi

2k for black and 2.5K for color is the advertised yield from HP based on 5%

In standarized test methods developed by the International Imaging Technology Council, testing is done also based on 5% coverage with factory default printer settings. Benchmarks of OEM hp carts more or less using this test come pretty close to their advertised page yield. I use this test to make to see how well a compatible cartridge performs in toner usage and density in comparison to the OEM using the same printer, within the same environment.

I also have the 2600n.. and its great but if you print a lot of color.. those cartridge runs out fast...

also if you're out of 1 color and have toner in stock, it just stops printing.. wont even let you print in b/w only...

If you print with more the 5% coverage then the ink will run out a lot faster. Pictures and Pie charts can really drink ink.

Laserjets are money pits.

Laserjets are energy hogs.

Laserjets are slow.

Laserjets are lousy at photos.

Laserjets can't be refilled with bulk toner very well.

Laserjets are HUGE.

Laserjets are HEAVY.

PS: They do make nice pie charts on coated paper though.
