we have an hp color laserjet 4600 network printer and one day it just dropped off the network. i checked the cable and it was fine. however, there is no link light lit up on the network port on the printer. i pulled out the rj-45 connection board and plugged it back in and tried and still no luck. do this things just stop working? should i order new one? i can't think of anything else it could be. i have printed diagnostics and it just states its not connected. the part is a hp jetdirect 615n. anything else i should try before ordering new part?

have you connected a laptop to the data jack to ensure the line itself is active? does the card show up in the front lcd configuration as an EIO device? that printer should have 2 other EIO slots on the back, try the jetdirect card in both.

at the router side, the jack that the printer is plugged into is lit up. i did connect a laptop to the printer and got nothing whatsoever. i didn't know it had 2 other EIO slots, will try that. thanks

Connect the laptop to the wall jack, not the printer.

You could, and possibly do, have a wiring fault between the jack and the switch.

If you do plug the laptop into the printer directly, you'll need to use a crossover cable.

The 615n JetDirects are notorious for crapping out. More often than not when our HPs lose their LAN connection its due to the 615n dying. 620n FTW.

I recently spent several hours trying to get a JetDirect card on an HP printer working. The client had always used the printer's LPT port, so the network card had never been tested. I finally gave up and went back to a parallel connection.
