No the plextor is still running like a champ in my freinds machine that I sold him then built my current one. I went with HP because the price was too good to turn down last spring doing the old Office Depot pricematch before they got smart and took it away.

Yes they where both the same speed 8/4/32. I like them both equally becuase they both worked flawlessly but you run a greater risk of getting a bad drive if you get a HP. Just like any pc product you run a chance of getting a bad one. I have heard that rma a plextor can be a nightmare if you have to do so. The rma support for the HP is more giving than Plextor but this is just second hand knowlege from others I have read about in news groups on the subject. I have had no personal experiances with rma any of the two manufactors so I cant personally tell you which one really stands behind there product. The only drive I have had a problem with was a external usb sony drive that realy sucked.

I did the onvia\pointclick thing for my plextor 12x10x32. you have to register at pointclick before making the purchase. oh, and free shipping.

the drive is AWESOME. i have been burning 8x rated CDRs at 12x since i got it. so far, since the drive arrived early last week, i have burned around 20 discs. it's FAST.

and outpost.com has that 50 count spindle of 80min CDRs for $15... so i got that too.

the access rate of the plextor does seem slower, than my other burner (ricoh 7040a, very old) as well as my regular ROM readers. but you should not be using your burner to read as much as you should be using your readers to read (it wears out the mechanisms).

and the burner, 12x10x32, supports burn-proof technology which means the burning laser stops burning if there is a buffer underrun (maker of "coasters&quot😉. then restarts when the buffer is no longer empty. I have yet to actually see it in action though (which is a good thing).
