HP CD-Burner, 12x but still slow speed.

I have a HP CD Burner, 12x write speed.
It's supposed to do 600 mb in 6 minutes. But when I record a 600 mb CD, it takes an hour! I run a AMD 1ghz... 640 ram. My resources are like 90% when I write. What is wrong? I have already taken one back and asked for an exchange, but it didn't help..
you can reply here please, or email me at: Rogue_CA@the-pentagon.com

thanks in advanced

What software are you using to burn? Programs like CDRwin, if they aren't registered, will display 12x when they are really limitted to 1x. It's the same with disc jugg.

I am burning from my hardrive to cd.
-I am using the HP Cd Writer Software that came with the burner.
Yes, it's set at 12x write speed.
How can I enable the DMA?

Most of the time enabling DMA reduces the use of the cpu and increases the access time of the cdrw to the memory, thus increasing the efficiency of moving data to your cdrw. In otherwords, it should fix your problem.

As someone looks to have mentioned, you probably didn't have DMA enabled for the Writer and were operating in PIO (programmed input/output). DMA makes a huge, huge difference as it allows the device to access RAM directly without going through the CPU (wasting many clock cycles and hampering performance.) It isn't at all uncommon to see 90% CPU usage when operating in PIO modes.
