HP burner drivers for XP???? model 8250i

I have an HP 8250i cd burner and windows XP will not recognize it. I have tried looking for drivers for it with no luck. I went to HP's site and the only way to get drivers for this drive is to pay the shipping which I really do not want to do. I have another burner that works so I just want this drive to be able to be usable. It just flashes all the time right now, and it wont even let me open it up to put in or remove a cd. I however can get XP to recognize the drive if I go to my computer properties and search for new hardware, but it will not work. After I restart my computer it doesnt recognize it again. Windows 98 still recognizes it and uses it so I know the drive isnt bad. Any help on where to get drivers or what else to do?

Thanks in advance

You don't need any specific drivers for the burner. It should be recognized by XP as a regular cd-rom. What you're describing with HP is to get the updated burning software for XP. I would look for upgrading the bios (although I had the same burner w/ the original bios working fine in XP). If you're having problems with XP recognizing the burner, check the installation (i.e., master/slave, primarty/secondary, cables properly connnected, etc......). Again, you don't need any drivers for the burner.

Well in XP it recognizes there is a generic 4x4x24 CDRW drive there when I go to my device manager and make it find it. I run a duel boot system everything is hooked up fine. Win98 has no problems with it in the same setup that winXP cant use it. This drive is not on the HP website as being compatible with winXP however I could buy the drivers to make it work, I do not want to do this.

Who knows though maybe it is something wrong with my drive after hearing your story.

Any other suggestions?

Search HP's site long enough and you should be able to download the drivers for free but they make it a PITA to find them.

I don't understand why you keep saying your cd writer is not compatible with XP and need to purchase the drivers. Again, you don't need to purchase anything.
Where do you see on HP website that says you need to purchase the drivers? According to this page from HP, 8250i is supported under XP. And according to this page from HP, you only need the cd-writing software upgraded to be compatible with XP.

As previously noted, I did have the exact same model working perfectly fine under XP with Nero as the cd-writing software. By the way, have you updated to SP1 for XP?
