HP A7217A WS CRT going out

2-4 years ago I bought This type of HP widescreen monitor
from a seller that had Sony and HP brands on an off-lease sale.

Now I find it is looking like it is going out on me.
when it is off for several hours and newly turned on, it will first blink red/blue/green and flicker and/or flicker to a light point,
and a few times turns off to the amber light status.

Pushing the power button off then turning it on has turned it back on. I also see diagonal lines on fresh start that go away over time.
These lines I was told to do something about in an old thread by a fellow Anandtecher (that has the Sony brand) but it wasn't a permanent fix.

Is there a cost efficient way of getting this repaired locally? It weighs about 95 pounds.

Maybe give up and go to LCD?

I watch tv torrents, web browse, and game with MMOs and single / multiplayer FPS.

For the uses you listed, I would just grab a nice LCD. Even TN panels are decent these days, and they're cheap. It'll use a ton less power and desktop space, too.

Since you are obviously not afraid of getting higher end stuff off lease (most people shy away from that type of stuff), I would recommend checking out EIZO's re-certified LCD's. http://www.eizo.com/purchase/direct/monitors.asp These are normally really expensive LCDs that have be refurbed/re-certified. I got my 24" for $375 shipped, and it is awesome. Most people are a bit skeptical about the re-certified part, but EIZO has a 15 day cash back guarantee (1 yr replacement warranty) on their re-certs so I figured I'd try my luck. Glad I did.

I wouldn't call it not being afraid.
When I bought it, my 17" was out or going out, and a few here were getting them from this power seller on Ebay.
I first tried a WS Dell LCD but I found I had trouble viewing movies on it. Darks were just too dark and I could barely see what was going on. I also had a limited res to work with and native res may not have worked well without a CRT's bonus of res changes without the LCD res loss problems.

If you're on the "4" side of that "2-4 years ago" range you say you bought your monitor - and that's the timeframe when you tried a Dell LCD - it was an early TN model and probably sucked serious @$$. I tried one of those also - it turned me off from LCDs for at least two years. Horrible ghosting (afterimage), input lag, lousy blacks - yep, it was pretty aweful.

I'm glad to say though that these screens have come a long way since those days. I currently use a Dell 2709W with a beautiful screen for games & movies. Compared to this I would never go back to even the best CRT I had back in the day (top end Viewsonic).

I guess JRW hasn't been around a while or fails to read PMs.
I have tried to look up online for places that repair CRTs, especially locally. HP just referred me to the authorized dealer lookup page which only showed me one some 45 miles away. That place only seems to sell services/printers/etc, not repair.
