I've got a review unit right now, and testing it, so far it's really cool. I think I'll get one myself to replace my useless Creative drive (too bad I don't get to keep the stuff I review though... :().

So does anyone else have this drive? Any bad things to say about it?

I haven't gotten mine yet. Have you figured out if its HP's own design or someone elses? Been a lot of speculation that it was a rebadged Ricoh.

The stores are starting to get these 9900s and the 9700s now.

12x write, 10x RW, 32x read, 8x DVD. 2MB buffer, bunch of useless HP software, PowerDVD 3, and some other not-so-useful software.

Technical specs like transfer rate and seek time not available on the box or manual... and I don't have the software to determine that too (magazine I write for targets consumers, so they don't need all the technical stuff).

Hope that answers your questions.

Ian@CDRlabs,

I haven't got the foggiest idea how to figure that one out. Is there a way to get that kinda info from the stuff that's printed on the drive itself?
