Greetings,

I upgraded the CPU in my HP 8710p to the T9300 about a year ago and was wondering if anyone knows if I can upgrade it further? And by further I mean past the T9x series.

SSD huh, hmmm... Maybe do both?

Do you know if I can use the T9600 or T9900 CPU's though? They share the same socket and wattage but the 96 and 99 use the higher FSB.

T9500 is highest you can go because of the 800mhz limitation of the chipset in the laptop. Just get an SSD, much more improvement than a 500mhz bump. What apps do you want such high frequencies for anyway?

Not going to happen. A quick search shows the minimum system requirements to be core 2 2.8ghz and 8800gtx. Your laptop is woefully weak. Best to build a desktop.

Can't, I am currently working in China and have no idea when I will be leaving. A laptop is my only viable option.

I could buy an X9000, OC it, then get the SSD, and now I have met some guy here who claims I can upgrade the vid card to an GF 8800 GTX out of an 8730... hope it's true! :)

Well, your gpu is replaceable. But how much is a mxm 8800m going to cost? $300 on ebay for the cheapest one and $500 for a x9000. At those prices, it'd be more sensible to buy a gaming laptop or build a desktop and sell it when you leave.

I can get the video card here for 100 dollars, and the processor for 300. A gaming laptop will run me roughly $2500.

the processor won't do u much good. i mean, how much can u really overclock a notebook without it overheating? go for the video card if it's really $100 just be careful not to get scammed.

search shows that model only came with 2700m (equivalent to 9700m gts and considerably worse than 8800m gtx) and 3700m (equivalent to 9800m gts and better than 8800m gtx) so be sure of what you are actually getting.

no hp came with the 8800m gtx equivalent 3600m and just a note: quadro cards aren't meant for gaming so they're worse performers in games than their geforce equivalents. if you get the 3700m though, it should be fine.

Well, since I am using a Quadro NVS 320M now, a better Quadro can only help regardless it's intended purpose. Also, I can use the GeForce drivers with a modded inf file from laptopvideo2go.

For 97 dollars it's sure as hell worth a try ;)

I just emailed the guy and told him the 8730's never came with that specific card and he replied that this card will work in 8710 and 8730, not that it came out of one, so that's my mistake. Error in translation - my Mandarin is limited to asking for a bag in the grocery store and ordering ice water in a restaurant, I'm afraid
