OK, I just got this calculator from a friend and I can't even seem to do 5*6! I'm in some menu that says "rad xyz hex r='x'" on one line and HOME right below it. Then there are these numbers 5 4 3 2 1.

Anyone know what I should do? I did 5,6 and then pressed the multiply and it worked.. but is there a way to reset its memory or something and go back to normal 5*6 method of doing calculations.

Don't like this postfix or prefix crap!

I dunno about the 49's, but when I had my 48 to do 5*6 you would do something like:

5 <ENTER>
6 <ENTER>
*

Unlike a TI where you would just put in 5*6, you had to use the stacks to perform arithmetic. Annoying, but easy to use once you got used to it.

RTFM

If you don't have one, get one. With out a manual this calculator will be nearly useless.

Most HPs are RPN which is way superior to the algebraic calculators if you learn how to run it. It is worth your while to learn RPN.

Think number, number, operator, rather then number, operator, number, equals. Lean to use the stack, I'll bet the 49 shows at least 4 levels of a memory limited stack this is a very nice feature again learn to use it and you will never want to touch a TI again.

Hm.. maybe I'll see if the manual is online. Another friend can do 5*6 on his 49G but doesn't have his manual with him either. Anyone with first-hand knowledge of this calculator know?

5 -> enter -> 6 -> X

MTH is the main menu button

to reset, hold A and F, then press ON

...should be the same with 49G, i hope

stick with the 49G. its well worth it. as mentioned before, youll never wanna go back to a texas instruments. the hp use of RPN (Reverse Polish Notation) is far superior. the hps can do a lot more as well and are great for engineering and calculus.

I was told that all TI are POS
HP is only for geeks use.., the RPN parts

go figure..
I don't need graphic calc though

The 49 also has an algebraic mode, but I don't know how to get to it.

learn RPN, it will be your friend after only a few hours.

You can do purple enter to get into equation writer then do in-fix notation, but as some here has stated already, once you learn how to use the post-fix it's faster and easier to manipulate numbers. I can't even use a regular calculator any more. Of course there are a few things the TI's are capiable of that I wished the HP's can do. ie iterations without having to write a program for.

I trust you guys when you say HP is the best. I know it's supposed to be the best. It's just that I'm just borrowing the calculator and don't want to use the stack formation type thing tomorrow.

BTW, thanks for the info b0red, worked nicely!

hey, sorry to highjack this thread, but no point in starting a new one when the 49g users are already here :)

just wondering, can you just move the curso one space at a time with the 49g? i want to get one, and i've tried the emulator from HP, but i cant figure out have to move the cursor one character at a time and how to delete one character at a time. you have to be able to do this right? i know a ti-89 can.. been pissing me off, trying to use it for my math hw (the emulator, getting real thing for christmas i hope) :|
