This might have been discussed, but unable to search, it makes me logon over and over again, just loops.

HP 2509m Monitor on sale for $270 with free shipping.

I would rather have a Dell Ultrasharp 24xx or a higher end IPS monitor, but boss will only let me spend so much. I'd like one with height adjustment of course, but for the $$ I can do without that.

For work, will be sitting at all day, working with CAD/GIS, probably will have two prog's open side by side.

Any opinions on this monitor? Like I said, would rather have a 1920x1200 than this 1920x1080, but haven't seen them side by side, will the 1920x1080 be ok?

Thanks, Josh

I just settled on an HP LP2475, which I ordered yesterday. From the tftcentral reviews of both, it seems to be superior to the ultrasharp and slightly cheaper. You definitely don't want a TN panel like the 2509m for the work you're doing. What's your price range? You make it seem like your boss has limited your budget to TN stuff. If so, you might want to talk to him about how inaccurate TN type displays are.

TN is ok for work, but if you are doing any smooth shading on the CAD stuff you will see some distinct banding.

see if your boss will spring for the samsung f2380 cpva. usually goes for around $320.(probably 370 after tax/recycle fee) 23' 1920x1080.

the HP LP2475 appears to be $556 at Amazon, which is too much. At home, I have a HP w2207h, which I love. How do I tell if a monitor is TN? Specs for my HP at home, and the 2509 just say "Thin-Film Transistor LCD active matrix", so how do I tell if one or both are TN? I agree that for the price, the 2509 is most likely TN, but my HP w2207h, if it is TN, then TN is good enough for my eyes. Specs for the w2207h:

Although the w2207h does have "BriteView Technology", whatever that is.

Thanks, Josh

to gorobei, the samsung f2380 is just what you said at newegg, $319. However, it is 1920x1080, so not sure I'd be gaining anything over the HP, as far as "screen size real estate". I did see that it has cpva technology for better picture.

I currently have an 22" Acer 223 (x223w?) that got on sale for $140/free shipping. But, I hate it.

as for $$, might be able to talk boss into $320, but no higher.

Thanks, Josh

You're definitely better off going with the slightly smaller res if it means you don't have to work with a TN display. TN displays display far fewer colors (262K vs. 16.7M), but most are able to fake the remaining 16.45M colors fairly well with dithering. They also usually have worse color accuracy, but the big problem is their viewing angles (example: http://www.behardware.com/news/7892/benq-fp202w-tn-panel.html). With TN panels, colors at one end of the screen can be significantly different from those at the other end of the screen thanks to horrible viewing angles. This also makes it more difficult to present people with info on the monitor if they are viewing it off center.

The w2207h is actually a TN display, but from what I can gather it's one of the better ones. As for f2380 vs. HP 2509m, I'd take the samsung any day of the week. The slight loss in resolution is more than made up for by the better image quality and viewing angles.

Thanks to all that replied. When looking at spec's, how do I tell if it is TN or not? Just as an example, here is an HP w2338h ($219 at OfficeMax). What do I look for to tell me it is TN?

Also, which I should have said in first post, I'll need a new video card, the one I have only supports 1680x1050. Which is part of the reason I'm limited as to cost of monitor. Can anyone recommend a decent, basic nvidia card (Not for gaming)? Will go in a Dell Dimension 9200.

Thanks, Josh
