From today's Circuit City newspaper ad:

ZE1110

1.0GHz AMD Duron, 14.1" TFT XGA, 256MB SyncDRAM memory, 20GB hard drive, 8x DVD, 56k modem.
$1149 less $100 HP MIR less $100 CC MIR less $50 price break = $899.99

comes with 1 yr free Compuserve internet access.

Seems like a good deal for the price-conscious.

Wow... this is so tempting a month before I go back to school... (on co-op now). I promised myself that I would not spend extra to get a fast laptop, though when all I'm gonna use it for is typing notes. We'll see how that holds up :p

It's cheaper to order this from Outpost. Shipping by ground is free and you don't have to pay tax in most states. If you buy this from CC, you're most likely going to pay tax which is not chump change on $1000.

Thanks kimdani1. Tax for me is $63 so that would be a savings. Outpost does charge tax apparently in AZ, CA, CT, OH and TX for anyone interested.

is TFT the good 'non-glare' type of screen for monitors, or is this screen going to be impossible to use in any kind of sunlight...?

ok...i'm not very familiar with laptops and their accessories. I'm assuming you can connect one of the portable cdr recorders to this unit, but what kind of cost am i looking at if i can find the least expensive one that has burnproof? I think i'm really gonna need a cdr recording drive to get anything i download off the laptop....without using floppy discs. Or is there another way to get data off the laptop without using a cdrecording drive or floppies?? this laptop looks like a good deal to me...thanks

also, does this unit have an output so you can hook it up to a tv and use the dvd drive that's on it? I couldn't find this info in the outpost description. Guess i should check out cc description to see!

best way to get stuff off a laptop is to connect it to a network.

i "think" the fastest USB 1.0 burners are only 4X due to bandwidth (not sure)...so be prepared to wait for your data, unless this one has firewire.

if you are gonna buy from a retailer check out their extended warranties or call HP and get a quote from them within 90 days. Its worth every penny for a piece of mind.

AMD notebooks kick ass. I have a Sony FXA32 (900mhz duron) and I am very happy with its performance. The added surprise to my Sony is that the processor is upgradeable for those that are daring. I can buy a 1.2ghz Athlon mobile processor for $150. I don't know if all AMDs notebooks are upgradeable. I guess the only way to find out is to open it up and see if the processor is removable.

Do these Durons suffer from the same heat problems that plagued the early AMD mobile chips ?

cheers,

Even if the CPU is upgradable, you may not get the advantages of a mobile CPU unless the BIOS is updated too.

More and more notebooks do not come with a floppy drive these days. Anyone tried using the emergency boot disks (NT, W2K, XP) with USB floppy drives?

The $50 price break is just a fancy way of saying that it is on sale for $50 less than the $1149. Some ads say "instant savings". Same thing. Don't know why they can't just come out and say it.

Saw an open box ZE1110 at a local best buy for 999 . The sales guy says that the rebate shall apply and will come to 799. Does not have the physical box, but he says that they will provide all paperwork reqd to get the rebate. Hot? or not?
