Unfortunately, it's really hard to get 17" 1080P cheap. I have 2x older laptops that have such a screen and it's a dream to work on, but what I really need is 2560x1600 and there's only one LG laptop with that res and it's really expensive.
I picked up a pair of 4K (*) laptops for under $250 ea.

My eyes can only take a 17" 1080P, had a Inspiron 7559 15.8 4k running at 1080P, but downgraded to my older Ideapad Z710 recently for 17.3" 1080P, getting old ain't for sissies.

Just a heads up for anyone interested it's back in stock at the $399.99 price instead of $429.99. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on one because I figured at $400 I can't go wrong. This will replace my VERY aging HP Elitebook 8460p that is rocking a Sandy Bridge i7 with an Intel iGPU, and a total crap 1366X768 screen.

I was almost ready to pull the trigger, but then in the specs section it says "Chrome OS". May be a mistake, but I don't want to have the possibility this may be a Chromebook.

Here's the link to HP's product page for that model- HP 15-ef2127wm Obviously Walmart miscategorized it, it's listed in the Chrome OS laptop group.

edit- I was curious to see if this model had space for a 2.5" storage drive, and it doesn't after reading the service guide. Guess it's to much to ask for a single 8GB dd4 module for a cheap 16GB upgrade.

So, what graphics would this have? Integrated? Can it play any game at all?

Yep, mine arrived today and on the side of the box it says Ryzen 5 5500U APU. Here's a link to the specs if you are interested. https://www.amd.com/en/products/apu/amd-ryzen-5-5500u

Definitely a mistake on Walmarts website. Mine arrived today and right on the side of the box listed with the other specs is Windows 10.

Did it come with 2x4GB ddr4, or a single 8GB module?
IDK....I can't take it out of the box yet. haha I bought it but it is a birthday present and I can't open it until the 12th otherwise my wife will kill me......sorry man wish I could give you a better answer lol but I can't.

This is the reason why I keep saying "What the outside of the box says" lol.

Yes, I had saw that earlier in the thread.

I ended up ordering one, only because the wife said get something for you, our anniversary is coming up. Who was I to argue? Pondering on memory upgrade now.

edit- up to $529 now and I have a single 16GB module on the way too, swipe an 8GB stick from wife's box for 24GB

Not sure any of these plans will work if they give you 2 x 4GB, and one is soldered in... At least that's what I saw with the comparable Lenovo laptop, not sure if hp does it this way... Also, mismatched sticks don't give you dual channel I thought...

I downloaded the service guide, they are indeed 2 memory slots. Matched memory pairs are a myth, we see a lot of new boxes and laptops configured with 12GB. Memory channels are independent of each other. I always try to get the same speed, though.

edit, you did have me thinking about the max memory though, can't seem to find it on HP's site

Matched memory is not a myth, it does give you 5% more performance for free... Just because "they" configure it this way does not mean it's the right thing to do, even if it works, lol.

Well sure, memory timings default to the slower of the 2. All I was saying was mismatched work just fine, and great if they have the same speed and timings.

We'll see when they get here how much ram this laptop supports.

edit- It still hasn't shipped yet. :-(

It's not just timings, usually if you don't have a matched pair (in terms of the amount of memory) you don't get dual channel, it will all be single channel. You do get more memory with what you are proposing, which may help things (especially if we are talking 8GB vs 12GB), but you do give up that potential performance boost. You would think you should get "partial" dual channel on the 8GB, but I don't think it works that way for the most part. We are talking small differences, 5-7%, but I would rather have it than not ;)

Intel calls that "Flex Memory Access", and indeed, a portion of the total system DRAM will be running in dual-channel.

However, I am unaware that AMD has a similar technology.

On AM3/AM3+, AMD offered "Ganged" or "Unganged" operation for the two memory controllers. "Ganged", meant that both memory controller channels functioned as a 128-bit block, whereas, "Unganged", allowed the two 64-bit channels to function independently.

So I needed one for my daughter for high school, and while this hp was really tempting, it is OOS now (well, at least for the 399 price). In the mean time I found out Costco has a similar offering by ASUS, at $550, with 16GB RAM and 512GB NVMe, 14" 1080 screen. If you are a Costco member, this is a pretty good deal I would say, 2 year warranty on top of 90 day return. I ordered it, this way I won't be tempted to do any "upgrades" to it, so in the long run I will save money :D.
It also has a backlit kb and fingerprint reader (the hp does not), but one memory module is built in (really? it costs THAT much to provide a socket?). I wonder if the hp also has one memory module built-in, this seems to be the trend these days.
Here is the link:

Memory matching points all worth noting. The plan was to get 1 16GB stick now and later get another just like it. If indeed the bios supports 32GB. The chipset certainly does.

edit- still hasn't shipped
