ok, I tried a gainward bios with the voltage at 1.3 and 400/550 (1100) then 350/500 and still had problems.
So I went to the rev 03 PNY bios and all is well again. cool bits let me go to 440/1220 3dmark05 4915 with lots of artifacts so i clocked it to 429 /1200 and got a better 3dm05 score of 5367
Turns out my psu is 320w which isnt as bad as I thought but I cant remember now if I tried the PNY bios at 1.4v ,,,my PNY does not like the gainward flash it seems no matter what voltage.
I just looked at my settings and I guess at some point I decided to go with coolbits optimum which at the moment is 418/1130
If anyone reading this has any insight into my mainboard bios woes please post. I got a g5690 from best buy which I seem to have confirmed has a fs56 v2 mainboard,,, award flash will not let me use the bios file for that board and winflash will no longer load in XP for some reason (I tryed un/reinstalling it)
This has all been very educational thanks again.

Just one more update from me. I dunno what I was smoking when I said I have a 320w PSU.... looked again and it's a puny 200w!
Any reccomendations or comments on limitations with such a small psu, my gt seems to run ok but am I missing it's potential?
peace

good god...what are u doing spending hundreds of dollars on a video card when you still have a feeble 200w psu??? even my first celeron system (466 mhz celeron) had a 220w psu from hp!! the psu is the most fundamental component in a good stable system...especially if you are overclocking or running power hungry videocards of today, which you are.

get at least a good stable 400w psu, or more if you can. do it right the first time and its likely that it'll outlive most of your components.

I did a bit of research before I bought this card and it seems people with shuttles can use it. It's power requirements arent as much as some other cards but I would like to know if I'm missing something A shuttle system is tiny btw, you may have missed that. It's psu is small cos it's small to fit in the case. Shuttles are not the best rigs to overclock because of heat concerns and I'm not into that so much. My video card runs a lot cooler with the case off so maybe I should buy a psu and hang it out the case, I can always use it to power my future pc ... Do intel and AMD based systems use the same type of psu? (cringe at my ignorance) Just to paint a better picture for you here are some specs for my shuttle, it may not be what u think:

p4 3.0 with hyper threading 800 mhz fsb
1 gig pc 3200 ram (400)
7200 rpm hd who cares how big it is, it's the speed it rotates baby! ... ummm ,,, ok its 160 gigs
16x/40x/50x?dvd+/-rw
and in doom 3 I can get 70 fps
with 1040x at high settings but with probably a lot turned off with my cfgs, I play happily online at the same resolution hitting 60 fps most of the time.
After a lot of tweaking and research I got doom 3 running pretty well but I came here to see if I could improve things. I just got the shuttle a couple of months ago and I'm tempted to build an AMD rig, maybe I should settle for what I have and upgrade when quake 4 comes out.
peace

okay, yeah i missed the part where u said u had a shuttle. i guess you can get a psu and hang it outside if you dont mind how ghetto its gona look...lol

as for intel and amd using the same psu, yes. psu's are universal, with the exception of older ones that do not have the four pin connector that most modern mobos require.

edit: universal for regular sized computers, im not sure about sff's since i know nothing about sff's other than they are tiny

Thugs-Truly-Rocks!

Question, what do you guys use to Get your GPU temps? and is 75 @load too high?

I know it shows the core temp in coolbits and expertool....but it is just the current temp... it dont show the peak temp....

I ran 3DMark with the Expertool running in the backround...and each time 3DMark changes sceans it splashes to windows and you get a quick glimps of the current temp...there must be a better way..

thanx

BTW, Thanx to Thugs I now got a Evga 6800LE transformed into a Gainward GS 6800 Ultra!
...Little worried bout the temp though...

A nornal 6800 or LE even with rivatunrer unlocked pipes will never be a GT ot ULTRA, the memory is only 2.0ns ram not 1.6ns like most Gt's and all Ultras.

turn it into a Gainward GS 6800 GT and youll be even happier :D

run a program called RTHDRIBL in a window to gain your true max temps. coolbits or expertool will do fine. if you want a time log graph use rivatuner.

HTH :)

you are confused,
the eVGA LE6800 is an Ultra card w/1.6ns mem.

thug need some advice from u....i currently hv a BFG 6800GT PCI E card....the default speed for tis card is 370/1000 which is factory Oc by 20mhz then the normal GTs. If i use the GW bios and flash it?? will my card turns to the default 350/1000 like the normal GT or still 370/1000?? Btw any 1 tried flashing the GW bios using a BFG 6800GT PCI E card ...does it work ??

btw i manage to OC my core to 430-435 but my rams is a drawback at 1100mhz...like to push higher for my rams...

hope to hear from u soon thug!!

Viperion,

The BIOS should tell the card to run 350/1000 until you overclock with Coolbits/Rivatuner/whatever.

Core speed matters a lot more than mem speed, and most cards I've seen can't get to 1200, so if you're already getting 1100 then I'd be content (but who ever is?).

Thugs doesn't recommend running this BIOS with GT boards, he found that quite a bit of them couldn't handle the extra voltage well enough and would become unstable.

this bios mod isnt for PCIe cards.

GT card compatability is sketchy at best.
not all GT cards are built as well as the Gainward cards, and some cant handle the 1.4v requirement.

Well Thugs, I'm selling my Gainward.

I bought a BFG 6800GT and have had some trials with it thus far (don't actually have it at the moment). I have to say BFG's support is winning me over. I just wish that they'd take things a few steps further and do something like what Gainward did. I have to say, depending on the outcome of Gainward's future, I don't know which company I'd choose to go with in the future. I guess if I continue to overclock, I'll probably go with Gainward as a lifetime warranty doesn't help if I void it.

Of course, I'm pretty content right now, as I have an X850XT PE in my system at the moment. I'm trying to sell it though, as I think I wanna stick with nVidia for now (although this card has gotten me to a point where I'll consider an ATi card just as much as an nVidia one now). Maybe if R520 is all its cracked up to be I'll go with it. If not, then I might just throw a 2nd GT in my system instead.

Hi Thugs -

I have a BFG 6800 Ultra OC 425/1100. I was wondering if you heard anything about flashing this card with the gainward bios. I read through the thread but really didnt see anything. Also which programs would your reccomend for the following:

1. View and edit the bios
2. Flash the bios
3. View temps

Thanks!

To view the temps you can either just look at the nVidia control panel, or else use Rivatuner (which I believe can be made to make a log of temps so you can check what it ran while you played a game or whatever).

To flash, NVFlash is probably what you need.

I remember seeing a program that would let you easily mod the BIOS for nVidia cards, but I can't remember what it was called. Thugs will be able to give better advice on all of your questions anyways.

Thanks darkswordsman17.

Just flashed my BFG 6800ULTRA using the new ultra bios and it it lowered my score form the stocked bios from 508? to 49??. I then flashed it again but this time using the new gt bios supplied from the floopy boot disk and it raised it from the stocked bios from 508? to 5222. This is after moving the clock speeds back to ultra speeds 425/1100 after i flashed to the gt.

So thanks Thugs!!!

6800 Ultra cards can use pretty much any GT or Ultra bios file. for you id suggest the GTU bios. link

1. NiBiTor v2.0
2. one of my precompiled flashdisks
3. NV control panel, ExperTool, RivaTuner

HTH :)

I have an evga 6800GT PCI-E. I've tried modding my bios from 3d 1.3v to 1.4v. I know that it's been changed because I gain another couple of mhz on my core. But, max core with the stock 6800GT PCI-E bios is ~391, and with the 1.4v bios it is ~395.

Should I be trying another bios to help me get higher? under load it only seems to get to 65C or 68C. I'm kinda wary of flashing my card with another manufacturer's bios, but I suppose if the design is similar to EVGA's (reference, i think), it shouldn't matter.

Thug do you have any suggestions? I was hoping to get my core up to at least 410! I suppose some cards just don't like to go higher though.
