HOWTO ?? : Getting started with Audio Technology

I have always been interested in Audio. My parents are musicians and I have been trained in many instruments. I want to take my love of music to the PC. My OS of choice is *NIX. I would like to start creating my own music. Any suggestions on where to start ? I guess the goal would be to get good enough to work at the Studio level doing audio engineering for musical groups. Any advice ??

I am doing some research for the same thing... either a BeOS or FreeBSD based recording studio.

I have used both BeOS and BSD....I like them both as OS. I certainly am aware of BeOS being more tuned to multimedia, but I imagine I would need some 3rd party software. Why do you suggest BSD, though ? Do they have some pre-packaged utlities to do studio type stuff ?
