I don't want to turn this into another PS2 vs. Xbox fanboy flame debate.

To me, it doesn't matter which school has a better alum network as I didn't go to either school, (as my Ivy school obliterates your USC alum network, fwiw ).

Seriously though, the point is that as an objective academian who has worked at top levels in industry, I've witnessed UCLA alums enjoy a far richer reputation among the communities that count. Now I'm talking pretty elite levels. At lower non-distinguished levels, USC alums are more prevalent.

I got news for you - I live in a community "that counts" yet not any one of the "movers and shakers" is a UC grad. You insist you don't want to turn this into a dick-waving contest but you keep putting down USC without showing any solid reasoning, proof, or examples, which makes you not much more than a thread crapper. Speaking of sh!t, I call BS on your ivy league education. Do you mean you sleep in the foliage outside the library?

Oh, to top it off, I HAVE competed against UCLA alum in a couple occasions and WON, and have seen the same thing happen to others graduating USC. One of them works for a large auditing firm and was picked out of several hundred applicants, and another works as a DVD producer, also selected from hundreds, including many UCLA graphic design majors.

Now, because I know your lace thong panties are already wedged way up your asscrack, I'll make it clear that I am NOT stating that UCLA graduates are worthless. In fact, I know one that started his own financing company from scratch and is a millionaire; and another that makes bank working for a bank, and was dating a Laker girl. But your statements that USC graduates don't really matter "where it counts" are pretty much worthless until you say exactly where and how.

Speaking of USC, how hard is it to get in? I really really really really wanna go there, but if it's like UCLA, there's no chance I'll be admited.

you guys are getting way too into this discussion which is really stupid. there are successful people that come out of both schools!

i'm a ucla grad but i plan to go to usc grad school. why? cuz usc's masters program is supposed to be easy to get into and easy to complete. basically it has a rep of got money? got a degree. this is only for engineering which i'm familiar with, not speaking for other majors. and at my company, northrop grumman, i have heard some managers say that they would not even look at your resume if you went to usc for your masters cuz they know its' a copout. anybody who applies and has the money gets in.

but i'm not bashing usc. i'm sure it's a respectable enough school. it just doens't have the best rep.

That's what I was saying. I never stated that UCLA grads were worthless. Toolio, however, insisted on spewing more biased, unfounded crap which I had to respond to.

Anyway, your statement might be true for the Engineering school, but their other masters programs are world-reknown and very very selective. I have a friend taking the commercial real estate development master's program... he's getting worked into the ground, and he had honors at UCLA. Apparently some of the heaviest hitters in the industry have passed through and taught in the program. Same goes for cinema, and business/accounting/finance. IMO, UCLA's engineering program is a hell of a lot better, both for grad/undergrad.

I agree with you. This conversation is absurd.

To compare a World Class First-Tier School/students to a 2nd-Tier School/students is absurd. For athletic conference comparisons, who cares? Is that going to get anyone a job? I don't think so.

I assisted in grad school admissions where "brownie" points were given depending on the college and prior alum performance at our school. UCLA was given points, USC none.

I worked in Consulting and worked at a Fortune 10 company. I assisted in recruiting by taking kids to dinners. At the Consulting firm, no USC kids ever made into the final rounds of interviews compared to the UCLA kids. At the Fortune 10 company (because the recruiting numbers were larger), I did see some USC kids make it, but at far, far less numbers than UCLA kids--and at reduced salaries for the same job--yes, markedly reduced salaries ($10k).

Sure there are USC kids that go on to nice careers. But those are the ones that graduated at the TOP of the class-- as is gnerally the case at any lower tier regional/local school (In NYC, the USC disadvantage becomes even more prevalent than in LA).

Well I'm applying there this fall. San Diego State will be my 2nd choice. (business major)

USC has the 2nd business school in the state behinds UCB, and is relatively easy to get into (3.3-3.6 vs 3.8++)

Can't even try UCLA cuz guess what? they dont' have a business program

and it's not like i have "great" chances of getting into USC either. By the time I transfer, I'll be lucky to get high 3.4 gpa, which is below the 3.6 they "recommend" but well above the 3.2 that san diego state recommends.

gotta have a backup plan y'know

wrong. my GF greaduated with a business economics major. plus ugrad majors dont matter as much if you want to go into business. if you ever want to make above $70k, you need an MBA which renders your ugrad degree invisible.

i however, an am mechanical engineering major and would not recommend ucla's engineering school UNLESS you really want to do research. this entire school is dedicated to research and raising money for it. instruction is pretty bad with a few exceptions and you dont even get to do what i consider engineering until your 4th year. if you do want to do research, there are thousands of opportunities here and you can usually get paid to do it. i am right now!

ucla does have a great history program though. if you dont know what you want to do major-wise, just do history. the classes are easy, fun and informative and you can just get an mba afterwords.

i got into usc with my eyes closed.

i had monster grades and extra curriculars and all that jazz. my sat wasn't as high as it could have been. I didn't compete as hard as i should have for their scholarships though. that would have been the only thing that would have made it worth it.

i didn't go there - went to UCLA. (c/o 2003!)

UCLA grad programs are very hard to get into. They reject a lot of their own students which is just sad. A lot of them wind up at USC.

USC = University of Second Chance. Heheheh
