How's this system

I plan on purchasing these specs around christmas hopefully all will go down about 50 bucks (not each but all together)

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
Corsair ValueSelect
Maxtor DiamondMax 10 16mb cache 250GB SATA HDD
Gigabyte 6600GT
Microsoft Windows XP Home

Total comes to about $820 with shipping

I plan on upgradding the GPU to a 7800GTX near August of next year
I know it may bottleneck but i will deal with it for about 8 months
I plan on doing everything from video editing to gamming
No big games mainly FPS like CounterStrike:Source or Condition Zero


Is this a good system?, I already have the other componets such as a MSI K8N-Neo4/SLI motherboard

Yep that looks real good. I guess you have the case and all too??

I would try and save up though and just go with the 7800 now.

Why get such a mediocre video card and such a high dollar processor? I would get a $300 video card and a $200 processor, not the other way around.

i read somewhere that the gigabyte fan was noisy and it rattles...maybe it was anand's article. look for a different 6600gt (aka buy an evga).

I am officially going to start not recommending some of this value crap!!! You dont need to buy lowend value stuff when you can get patriot extreme PC3200 at cas 2-3-2-5 for 62 bucks for 512mb and 129 for 1gb....Why skimp and contribute to all the fools who seem to buy this stuff and then fill the board up with issues.

i just got some corsair value select. no issues, and i dont see how 2-3-2-5 ram is so much better than 2.5-3-3-8 ram anyway.

I am happy for you!!! I am sure some dont have issues....

I frequent about 3 main forum boards and I have seen tons of issues with some of this value ram......cas 2-3-2-5 makes often more of a deal then bandwidth for the A64....

I wouldn'd buy the stuff...I dont skimp on ram and power supply and I seem to have avoided computer issues even while having some of the more higher OCs on this board for the last 3-4 years...I think that speaks volumes....

If you havnt noticed I am on a tight budget and I can't afford a 7800GTX untill agust, now, would it make sense to go without a comp for 8 months when i could use it at christmas and Im deff. goin wit the CPU no one is gonna talk me out of it because when i get the 7800GTX i wont have to wait another 4 months to get that CPU
