Been lurking here for a few weeks, picked up alot. Im going to be building a system in the next couple weeks and I've almost nailed down all my components.

A64 3200+
SOLTEK SL-K8AN2E-GR
80GB Maxtor 8GB cache HD(already have this)
OCZ Performance Series 184-Pin 1GB DDR PC-3200 (Is there any downside to using one large memory dimm over two 512's? I may need to up my memory over 1GB and with only 2 Dimm slots this seems like the best option)
NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive, ND-3500A BK
EVGA nVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT
Audigy2 ZS PCI Sound Card
Still not decided on case/psu

Gonna use this rig for gaming, EQ2 is gonna be out soon. I dont see my OC'ing, will more than likely be running everything stock. This will be the 5th or 6th system I've built, but the first time really researching components and the first time im ordering it all from the net. Anything you would change, any problems you see? Feedback is greatly appreciated.

If that one DIMM is bad or goes bad, you're out of RAM. I'd say get one DIMM of 512 and another of 512 (or 1024), that way if one is or goes bad you've got the other to fall back on.

Looks good. There is no real disadvantage between 2x512 and 1x1GB. All those parts should give you a nice system. As for case and PSU, check out Antec for the PSU and Case, cant go wrong with them.

Also, EQ2 is very nerdy, maybe try something cooler like Doom3 or HL2 :)

I don't know anything about the SOLTEK SL-K8AN2E-GR MB you are planning to buy, but if it supports dual channel memory then you will want two memory modules. I find 2 x 512 to be a very good option.

Hi Azron,

Welcome to the forums. I just built my parents a system about 2 weeks ago using the same mobo (good mother board). One thing I neglected to notice when buying it is that there are only 2 ram slots instead of the typical 3 slots with most socket 754 boards. This is not a big deal unless you go the 2 X 512 Mb route with the intention of upgrading and having more ram later. If you plan on going up to 2 Gb with the same mobo.... you would have to buy 1 1Gb ram module :)

Enjoy!

yeah, buy the one stick. it's more cost effective this way, seeing as you're going to upgrade to 2gigs anyway.

Hehe, yeah EQ is pretty nerdy, ill be the first to admit. I will be playing Doom3, Farcry(have it now) and any other good game that come out. However, I love the depth of a good MMORPG and I have probably spent more time playing Ultima Online and Everquest than all other PC games I've owned COMBINED. To each their own I suppose.

As far as my ram requirments, EQ2 is shipping with 1GB ram recommended. EQ1 started at 128 if I recall and is now 1gb recommended, thus if history repeats itself, I may need to expand past the 1gb. I'd never messed with any memory larger than 1gb sticks so I'm glad to find out there is no performance difference. You would think Soltek would have put more than two mem slots on that board. Anyway, Thanks for the replys, I'm gonna go with this setup and one of the Antec cases/PSUs. ,
