I've heard that speaker stands affect sound quality of speakers...is this true? Some people buy or build really heavy stands or fill them with sand or whatever...is there any merit to this? I like my idea of three poles but I dunno if it will make an audible difference.

Yes. Empty tubes for poles can / will resonate. Ideally you want to fill them with sand, lead shot, kitty litter, etc. Using 3 poles is not a bad design - you could go with something like PVC or steel pipe, fill them, and spray paint - then cap off with solid wood.

the box with the checker tiles is supposed to be the speaker. I didn't feel like modeling a speaker :) it's just a representation of where it would go.

if I did use pipe...how would I connect it to a flat piece of wood? with a wooden dowel, I could at least put a screw in it, but a PVC or steel pipe would be hollow...how to connect it?
