yeah, the carosel part doesn't really matter to me, but it's almost the same price as the single disc model, so I thought, what the heck.

I never buy electronics that are refurbs, but that's just me. I'd go pick up a 50-70 dollar panasonic personally.

Check to see how old the model is.

Technology changes all the time, it could be using old tech for progressive scan.. Newer means better quality, even on cheap items..

Most of the time.

yeah I've made it a point never to buy refurb stuff, but this is just a replacement DVD player for a combo unit (the DVD drive died on it). I dunno. I want something long and black, not small and silver. It needs composite output and component output, as well as coaxial digital audio and rca stereo audio outputs. Still looking, but I'm going to keep that $40 unit in mind :)

This one looks nice too:

I'm kinda torn. I want a nice, regular-sized, black DVD player with progressive output. I have a 20" television with regular coaxial input only that I will be using most of the time, but I'll be using a projector on the weekends for movies. But that little silver player looks like a great deal, so-so ratings on Amazon, but for $40 what do you expect. Decisions, decisions. Oh well, my tax return won't be back for a little while, I've got time :)

If you're having to wait on your tax return to buy a $40 DVD player, then I would highly recommend the cheapest model you can find that will suite your needs. Doesn't appear you're in a position to throw money away or buy the top of the line stuff.

Denon is usually high end and good quality but this model seems to have some problems.

I recommend Pioneer.

Well, the return is like ~$300 or so, but I don't want to blow it all on a single piece of equipment, I'd like to save some too.

Plus...I'm not a big quality freak. I can't tell much difference between a $40 player and a $400 player. They both put the picture on the screen and both of the pictures look pretty good. I'm pretty happy with my Logitech speakers, for example. Are they high-end? Nope. Do they do a good enough job to make me happy? Definately! Same thing with a DVD player. I think I'm just looking for something nice that will last a long time. I don't have any kids (only 21) and I take really good care of my equipment. I figure Denon is a good brand and the $100 - $150 is about in my desired price range. I think I'll skip on that $40 player because one, it doesn't match the setup, and two, the reviews on Amazon says it falls apart pretty quickly.

Where are some good online shops to buy A/V equipment from? I am kind of skeptical about refurb stuff and I've avoid it in the past. I'd rather have something that will last than a fixed piece of junk, ya know? :)

I recommend Pioneer, they made great Laserdisc players and mine still works after 10 years.

The DVD player also are highly rated. For around $130 you can get one that plays DVD, SuperCD and DVD-Audio.

wow, that's pretty sick for a $130 player. Amazon says:

"As an anti-piracy measure, the player performs its own decoding of both DVD-Audio and SACD signals (not to mention standard Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 surround sound), passing high-resolution analog, not digital, audio to your integrated amplifier or surround receiver. This means you'll need an audio/video receiver with multichannel analog-audio inputs to fully appreciate multichannel DVD-A and SACD releases."

I have a Sherwood RD-6105 receiver with 6-channel direct input, is that what they're talking about? Here's a pic of the back of the receiver:

I've never used those plugs before. They are on the left - green, white, red, purple, blue, and gray. Are those the correct type of plugs to hook in the DVD player for SACD/DVD-A?

Yes, DVD-Audio is sent out via analog only because all the recording companies didn't want people making perfect digital copies.

In the high end, audiophiles have to spend a ton on a player in order to get good D-to-A convertors. This really pissed people off who had already bought $10,000 preamps or seperate D to A convertors.

PS: To use Dolby Digital or DTS you can use coax or optical just like any other DVD player. Only DVD-audio and SuperCD output in 6 channels of analog.
