OVERVIEW
Here are the salient facts of this case:
I was leaving MSP airport by bicycle after a flight from California. I was legally operating my bicycle completely in accord with MN statutes and MAC airport ordinances. I was following all posted signs. There were NO signs at that time prohibiting bicycles. I was rudely accosted by an officer in a passing squad car, came to a stop, and was immediately threatened with mace and taser if I didn't get off the bike and up on the curb. I did not understand the reason for this outrage.
I calmly yet firmly protested the threats, and said that I was happy to abide by all laws that applied, but asked what I had done wrong and why the process was so immediately belligerent. Officer Wingate said 'You can't ride here'.
I asked where that was posted. Officer Wingate made a vague gesture in the direction of the Lindbergh terminal and angrily said 'back there'. I asked for specifics of where it was and what the sign said, and tried to explain that I had been to the airport many times and had never seen such a sign. Officer Wingate became more angry at this questioning of his authority, and burst out 'I'm *telling* you you can't ride here'. I never raised my voice, used profanity or made threatening gestures yet I was threatened again: 'I'm going to mace you, I'm going to tase you!'.

Cliff's - he got Tased.

i had heard about people being hassled for wearing anti-war T-shirts
and investigative journalists getting singled out at the airport by TSA,
but the incident that really seemed like "this is going too far" was the
story about families in Maryland being threatened with arrest & jail-time
if they didn't have their kids vaccinated. i.e., forced vaccination.

but this tale of a bicyclist in Minnesota getting beat up sounds like
a candidate for the "top 5" list of police-state-ish incidents that have
occurred the last 6 1/2 years. it seems that stuff like this has happened
a lot more since 9-11.

Yeah, like the perp wouldn't follow orders. Don't do what your order to do means you get tazed. Every single story is the exact same thing, perp doesn't do what the cop says.

100% of "youtube taze stories" can be avoided if people stop being idiots trying to hold a court hearing on the sidewalk.

LOL just buy the way the guy typed up his account you can tell he deserved it. You don't try to fight the police when being cited for something; you take the ticket or obey them you want to fight it go to court, that?s what they are there for.

Either you're a biased fool or totally inept at summarizing. The key point from his diatribe was when he attempted to flee.

IF, and I mean IF, this guy's story is complete and accurate, that police officer ought to be fired immediately.

However, I must also point out that this guy is a dumbass, who needs to use some common fracking sense. He could have said "yes sir" and "no sir" until the cops left, and then done whatever the frack he wanted once they were out of sight. Instead, he got himself worked over and criminal charges. I hope he thinks it was worth it.

A man ought to know when he's fighting a losing battle.

then when he gets home pulls out things like MN statues and MAC airport ordinances.

Probably riding in circles around the terminal in flashy spandex trying to make a point at the expense of hundreds of others just trying to catch their flight.

Should have just shot the freak.

That said, police are tazing people too quickly.

You know, I am usually annoyed when people call P&N when anyone posts a thought-provoking post in OT. But your intent was clearly political. Why did you post this in OT instead of P&N? Are you mentally disabled?

Year old repost!

But I remember this thread awhile back and like others have said, you can just tell by the way he wrote his post that indicates that he deserved it. He's one of those morons who thinks he's making a difference by being a smart ass to the po-po. Hey, if he wants to fight for his right to do whatever, that's fine, but do it in a court of law and not right there on the spot.

IF everything in the blog post is perfectly accurate, he was just asserting his rights and not being a smartass.

The cop was giving illegal orders, some of which would also have placed the bicyclist in danger.

They weren't giving him a ticket and didn't plan to... he wasn't violating any laws.

He didn't flee as he wasn't under arrest, and he had not even been told he was being detained.

What do you mean by "giving illegal orders"?? I suppose that when there's an accident and police are directing traffic at an intersection, you find it illegal for them to wave someone through a red light?
