One of our carriers just picked shotgun pellets out of one of our fiber trunks out in Hickland, PA

Who shoots at fiberoptic lines with shotguns?

My dad works for a county's communications dept. They had a 911 call center go down because the line was shot by a shotgun last winter.

We used to have links go down in South and Central America due to people stealing the copper.

That's better than the RFO (reason for outage) we got once at the call center I used to work for.

The tech told us, "Gypsies stole the cable".... I tried to get something else out of him but that was his reason and he was sticking to it so that's what I put as the RFO. It was in Belgium, and I still wonder (if it was true) what the Gypsies were going to do with a mile of fiber?

They probably thought it was copper. We've had equipment stolen from a site.

Signal fade due to back hoe is a common one here also. However, the best one was when techs arrived at the cut location, they found a homemade cross stuck in fresh dirt with a dog collor on it. The tag said "sparkey". A back hoe was hidden nearby behind some trees.

Who? Your carriers competitors, that's who.

Fist it was Bill Backhoe, now we've got Steve Shotgun.

I live not far from the OP in west by god virginia and to answer his question. Rednecks, give em a case of beer and a case of shells and they will shoot anything they see.

It's like those old dual dial up modems they called shotgun modems that supposedly doubled dial up speed. They're just trying to upgrade the network is all.

Just got this one today. Fiber cut between CoonValley and Viroqua WI.

Here is the RFO:

Ok, here is the scoop regarding the cable cut.

The fiber route goes cross country through numerous land owners and one being Mr. Farmer. Mr. Farmers bull past away and he needed to find a special resting place. That resting place was right on top of the Frontier fiber. Why did it take so long to find the cut? For the most part, the techs had to walk the route until they found the exact location of the fiber cut/resting place. It was in the middle of a field so getting the heavy equipment to the location was no easy task. Mr. Farmer was just sick that they had to dig up his bull after it was put to rest. I can only imagine that once he receives the bill, he might want to join that bull. :'( Can you imagine digging up that bull again.... Yikes!!! The route was clearly marked and the farmer just forgot that it was there. Steve said that last year they had a similar issue with a horse.

There you have it.
