Just wondering how the quality of gpu's are on motherboards. Haven't seen any charts to compare and I've heard they get pretty hot and aren't all that great. I'm going to build a cheap computer for my sister and am trying to decide if she needs a seperate card or not

is she playing 3d video games? if not, then no, she does not need a dedicated gpu.

No video games or anything, just doing documents, watching videos, editing pictures, internet, and stuff.

Hows do the different branded gpus stack against each other. I guess like a 9400 compared to a 8300

If it is simple office stuff theres no need for a separate card. I'd say get an AMD 790GX board with a cheap Athlon X2 4850LE both of which can be had for cheap and is currently the best IGP going round.

the 9400 geforce with say a comparable intel cpu to an amd one, is faster than the 780g. I'd say the 9400 and 790gx are equivalent more or less (the 790gx though is just a 780g with the clock set at 700 vs 500 mhz though,... so you can probably just buy a 780g or even 760g and just set the clock higher. 760g is a 780g without h264/vc1 decode enabled).

The 8200/8300 on amd is not very fast , its like a intel 9300/9400 with half the shaders. its an older chipset so maybe they will replace it eventaully with an "ion" version for am2+/am3.

I'd say a 790gx is approximately equivalent to a radeon 2400/3450 . I have a 780g in my machine and you can actaully run say TF2 at 1024x768 on medium settings without AA and its plenty fast and smooth so its not completely ungameable. stuff like the sims or WoW runs fine on most of these (maybe not the 8200/8300).

I think honestly the best value now is a 9300 with an e5200. A 780g with a phenom 7550 or 7750 or 7850 is a decent alternative too (or you can splurge and save electricity and buy a athlon II x2 250...)

This but I'd suggest one of the faster 45nm X2 chips instead.

If this is all she does, ANY integrated gpu should be able to do it well. I'd say go for the cheapest board w/ good manufacturer support or something.

Nvidia chips have better HDMI audio support... But I doubt that's a concern in this sort of setup.

AMD 780G is roughly equivalent to HD 3450 (a tad slower, actually). AMD 790GX is equivalent to HD 3450. IIRC, GF8300/9400 are a bit faster, but not substantially. These are the most powerful IGPs on the market at present.

For 30 extra bones (with rebate or special sale pricing), you can get a discrete GF 9400 GT, GF 9500GT, HD 3650 or HD 4650 that will be a major improvement to any current IGP in all categories of measure.

there is a huge difference between the 8300 and 9400.

the 9400 is maybe barely faster than a 790gx. a 8200/8300 series chip is a lot slower thana 780g as its an 80mm design with 8 shadesr (the 9300/9400 is 16 shaders and 55nm).

The 9400 is pretty hard to buy actaully unless you get that ion board that is super expensive. Most of the igp boards hve th 9300.

But honestly your sister could probably run almost any IGP. a 740G is probably plenty with a low end dual core like a 4040e, or hell even single core sempron LE or something.

well it sort of is.

the 9400 right now is only 775 / atom, and the 8300 is only am2. just the 8300 is fabbed on a much older process so they cut a lot of the shaders out.

I thinkt hey are supposed to eventually release a 9400 for am2+/am3 but i guess it is not so big a priority for nvidia, since they already have the 8300 and people dont care that much
