replace the motherboard with a nforce 4 chipset chaintech motherboard. spend a little more for a 6600gt video card or buy a used 9800 pro. either card will smoke the 9600xt.

edit: nevermind, the chaintech board does not have a agp slot. so just spend a little more for the 6600gt.

Welcome to AT.

$40 on case and PSU is pretty scary.

$40 would be a decent budget for a PSU alone. I know you're on a tight budget, but yeah....

Is this a gaming computer / what games are you planning on playing?

this is going to be a gaming pc i assume. in that case, get an agp motherboard and buy a used 9800 pro.

edit: from the links you provided, you're going to buy a HDD from nowdirect.com. i haven't heard of that company before but i would recomend sticking with newegg. the prices usually aren't that big of a difference. maybe you can go with a 80gb instead and save 20 bucks there.

the board will save you about 9 bucks. it's going to be about $60 more total. it will last you much longer.

I can go for the mobo but i dont know if i can spring the cash for the video card.

You should probably hold off until you can afford it then. It's going to be a much better card for current games.

I'm going to get the Chantech VNF4 mobo instead but since this has pci-e instead of agp what video card should I get in replacement of the video card I was originaly looking at? Keep my tight budget in mind.

Get the Geforce 6600, it's about $10-15 more than the card you chose. Is a little bit more expensive but will yield better performance.

X700pro would be cheaper than a 6600gt... but if you can hold off until your budget is a little bigger it would make a difference.

I need to decide on a case. Nothing fancy, just cheap and amd compatible. Doesn't have to have a power supply because ill just get an antec 450watt or something.

I would keep the 6600GT. At 130 dollars, the x700 Pro is not worth it. TD is sold ou tof the ddr3 models that were going for 80 bucks.

How much can I get the 6600GT for? Also, if i get the 6600GT, do I need to get one with 256mbs?

There's a link above ($149 I think?)

Don't bother with a 256mb version.

Thanks. that still leaves me with this - what case and power supply? Nothing fancy or unnecessary.
